Help With Reverse Camera Install
To the mods...If this thread is in the wrong spot please move it I wasn't sure where to put it
Please Help! I just installed my reverse cam and everything works fine except it doesn't come on when I switch the car into reverse...I read that you DONT hook it up to the reverse light because then you have to start your car in reverse.. Instead - I hooked it up to the DARK GREEN amp wire in the trunk...However, it still doesn't seem to be working properly. So in summary here's what I did: - Reverse light wire connected to dark green amp wire - black GND wire under metal nut near amp - Yellow RCA cable into "Reverse Cam" cable coming from HU - Red wire hanging off the yellow RCA into the purple/white "Reverse Signal Input" wire from HU The camera works if I hook it up as a "video input" instead of "rear cam input" and just switch the AV source to that video input (and I can drive with it on, kinda cool) but when I had it plugged into "reverse cam input" it wouldn't switch to the camera when I shifted into reverse... So my question is.. - Did I hook this up improperly? - What wire actually tells the camera the car is in reverse? - Is there a way to troubleshoot which wire is causing me issues? |
Have you look at the following DIY to trouble shooting yours?

I will look through this one to find any hints but I'm hoping someone with specific knowledge of this install could help out |
Sorry, I did not see that this is a aftermarket HU. Since it is market HU, you will have to tap the reverse camera input to the fuse box where the power is on when you put your car in reverse and not the green amp remote. This is to tell the HU to turn the back up camera function on.

Did you read my DIY? http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36323

Unfortunately, all these DIYs are just confusing me more as everyone is doing something slightly different for their HU and I'm not sure what applies to me... My camera came with one main cable, that has the Yellow RCA output and a red "reverse signal" wire at the end....half way down the cord it splits into another cable with: - Black GND wire - Red Power wire (I think that's what its called?) My understanding is that you need to first (in the trunk --> ) tap the red wire into the DARK green 12v amp wire (not reverse bulb) to get it to power on with the HU and then ground the black.. (Up at the head unit -->) The yellow RCA goes in for video input and the reverse signal goes into the HU "reverse signal input" wire (purple/white) I'm pretty confused at this point so hopefully someone can shine some light on the entire situation |
My camera just needs three things, power, ground, and output. The headunit needs the input of the camera (one wire), and the trigger wire to tell the headunit that you are in reverse.
Your camera appears to need power, ground, AND trigger power to switch it on. So supply the camera with a switched power source and ground, then the trigger wire to that "reverse signal" wire. Then supply the head unit with the input from the camera AND the trigger wire. |
For the RCA input, you did it correctly.
For the red "reverse signal", you need to tap it to the reverse bulb or light at the trunk. This is to turn on the camera when your car is in reverse and also it send video image to the HU. For the "reverse signal input" at the HU, tap it to the fuse box or wire to turn on when your car is in reverse, this is to turn on the back up camera function when your car is in reverse. |
I'm going to try following this guide:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...11#post1267711 He has the red power wire going to another red wire on an un-used harness in the back by the headunit.. Also has the purple reverse wire going to the reverse bulb by driver wheel-well Both of which I did differently.. |
