Clutched Supercharger Build, yes they do exist

So I have been telling the local's about this but I think now that the Supercharger is here and we are starting to dab everything up its time to tell everyone here. We are debating making kits and base line tunes for people. However that is a long ways off so for now this is a thread to just enjoy the development over the next few months as we build and test our prototype on this vehicle.

My Close Friend and Myself began working with these Superchargers many years ago on the Mazda V6 KL Motor's. It lead to quite a few different groups jumping into the mix after he (Matt) proved it could be done.
This is a video of one of the first kits made to fit with the longer primary headers made by Pacesetter:
[ame="http://youtu.be/SzalZG7s3TI"]http://youtu.be/SzalZG7s3TI[/ame]

These Superchargers are found on the 2003 Mercedes C230 Kompressors. They were made for a 1.8L Motor. In our V6 testing we were using a 2.5L motor and with the stock pulley we would see between 5-7psi with next to no drop up top.
Now we are working with the FR-S 2.0L so I expect the boost to be around the same possibly higher with the stock pulley. I have no intention of making a bigger pulley at this time but Matt could handle that should it ever come up. (Matt is a Process Engineer here in Tucson)

For the time being I have not decided if the FR-S will see a full conversion to E85 or not. The reason for this is fuel upgrade requirements and availability. Where I live E85 is not that hard to find but outside of the major city it can be a pain and this car is meant to be my Daily so Gas with a Meth Injection kit might be the best solution instead.

Now when we built the Mazda Setups we did not have a Bypass setup for when the Supercharger was on. This means that while it was off the motor was forced to pull air through a non-functioning supercharger creating a restriction. We plan to change that so when the switch is off a bypass is activated and it does not run through the intercooler etc. So frankly when you want to be N/A you can and when you want to hit the switch and really surprise someone you can.

As for the why... well I like strange setups and this Supercharger has always provided that. I think this is the perfect setup for it.

When mounting it will require a specific header setup but it will look like an A/C Compressor basically. Only those paying close attention may notice that you have two of them otherwise they will just see the front clutch/pulley sticking out under the passenger head and think nothing more of it as the rest will be hidden under the motor. But as I said this means I have to make specific headers for this setup to clear the Supercharger and its piping/mounting. This will probably be the biggest headache. I have 2 idea's I just need to see which will end up working the best.

The Supercharger will be activated by using a basic On / Off Switch which will also control the Bypass and Meth Systems. I plan on using the Snow/Sport Switch when I get a hold of one. I think it would make for a very funny Snow Mode

For the time being Tuning will most likely happen on the OpenFlash Tablet, I have become a Vender locally with Vishnu and so far I think the product is coming along nicely.

For now these are the mods to the vehicle as it sits now, we will do a Baseline Dyno at some point of it N/A before putting the kit on. It has a Perren Pulley, AirRaid Intake, Header, our Prototype 2.5" Over Pipe, Midpipe with only Resonator and Isis Catback with the 1.33Beta Stage 2 Tune.
I will most likely be adding a lightened factory flywheel here soon as well but that's it.

This is what the Supercharger I ordered in looks like. I went with a used one while testing because it was cheaper. However I have been using a company out of California for years for rebuilt ones and will do so again once the need arises.

Enjoy the thread and feel free to throw out suggestions! :party0030:

I'm really curious to see how this mounts into the fa20, your costs, and your results.

Subscribed :)

That is a good point I should keep track of costs but labor time is obviously not going to be something that can be tracked or Fab time.

Funny that, every 4agze owner I know wish it didn't come with clutched pulleys...

Not entirely sure about going back to something toyota were doing in 1986.

If you are already putting in a bypass, whats the point of clutching the supercharger? Possibly just less rotating mass when in NA mode?

I doubt the (I am assuming MR2 1st Gen) 86 Version is the same as what Mercedes decided to use in 2003 but even after almost 20 years they could have used the same one who knows...

In all the years we worked with them the only issue we found was not shimming them correctly which would cause the Supercharger to be on all the time so it was pretty obvious if you were wrong.

Either way we shall see.

As for why a Bypass its more so the system when the Supercharger is off is not pulling air through a supercharger that is not moving and an intercooler system. Basically its the same reason you would not make a bunch of restrictions on an air intake to improve performance N/A.

The Point of the Superchargering being clutched is because its different and yes its like an A/C unit when you are not using it it does not create a power loss.

Yes, the sc unit is definitely different but the sc isn't the only problem. The clutched setup was mainly used for heat and eco management reasons. There are way better options out there already.

Anyway, good luck with your endeavours. This is just an opinion from myself as well as other people that do own a clutched sc setup.

On 1st Gen MR2's right because the opinion on the V6 Mazda's was completely different.

Either way thanks and I agree there are better way's but with my prior experience with these and the fact I want something easy to install and remove this is the best self contained way to really not have to change most any of my setup besides the air intake. All the other modifications can stay in place.

Do you actually expect to spend a significant amount of time in NA mode? I wouldn't ever envision myself not using the supercharger.

Btw, fun fact, my car before my BRZ was a 94 probe.

To be honest boost can be addicting and this is more for those who want that stealth mod. With the Probe it was a lot of fun because how did everyone treat that car? Mazda built or not it was a Probe and got nothing but ridiculous comments. But when you played dumb and just went along and then suddenly hit that switch right before running no one knew what was going on.

Will this be the most powerful kit, no.
Will this be a kit that many may like to just leave on, yes.

My goals are to have that fun power at the flip of a switch that just makes people scratch their heads and this setup always provides that. Plus you have to understand that while I REALLY like my FR-S my toy is a Vette with a 408 Stroker that makes over 500WHP. (It makes more than 350WTRQ at less than 2500RPM) So when I get in the FR-S its fun to drive but I want some more power, yet I know I bought the FR-S to be better on gas.
Using this setup I can do so, but you are right the moment that Supercharger is on and everything is setup I am very sure just as with that Probe I will be looking for excuses to turn it on.

But on the note of Probes and MX6's I had quite a few of them, in fact they were one of the funnest cars just because they handled so well and that little V6 was a lot of fun in my opinion. My time on Probe Talk was a lot of fun and introduced me to one of my closest friends. A lot of fun times.

So I spent some time looking at the car tonight and while it will require different headers I think I found a way to mount it under the motor on the passenger side so it can look like it belongs and be hidden while keeping the AC.

So the thread topic says build and I'm failing to see a single tangible product or build going on. Come back when you have an actual product...

I think you're trying to fix a problem that does not exist. With the sprintex/innovate twin screw, fuel economy during static cruise tests is not really affected by a noticeable amount - the car will still return 40mpg @ 70mph on the flat (UK).
