Longevity/Reliability of Enhine
What kind of life can I expect out if a turbo or supercharged BRZ engine?
I talked with ProTuning in Atlanta and they said I wouldn't see 100,000 miles out of a a modded engine as such. |
And they know this how? These cars are still too new to know what kind of longevity to expect from them. But I see no reason what so ever that these motors, with a good tune, whether they be supercharged or turbocharged, lasting. It also depends on how much power you want to put down. If you're shooting for a riduculous amount of power, then any engine's life expectancy will be decreased, be it this motor or any other motor. But if you're shooting for a decent number, say 250 - 300, again I see no reason why they wouldn't last with a good tune.

Too many variables to say. How much power? How well tuned? How well engineered is the system? How hard do you drive? Do you plan to add any safeties (i.e. AEM Failsafe, etc)? Are you going to drag/track the car a lot? A well engineered and well tuned system, Driven on the street, with a bit of sanity, making 280 rwhp, I don't see why the motor wouldn't last 100K miles. A track rat, making 400 rwhp, even with a well engineered system, probably won't. I'll say this - right off the bat if you are thinking of how to save money and are worried about the motor going for >100K miles, then probably FI is not for you.

my response to that is always that it depends 1000000000% on the tune. a well tuned car doesn't care that it is or isn't turbocharged. a crappy tune on an otherwise stock car will cause issues in no time flat. obviously there is an increase in wear on certain components and what not as the forces involved are increased, but that's nothing compared to what a life of knocking on shitty cali pump gas can do.

ProTuners in Atlanta only works on Subarus... the tech I spoke with I guess was basing his experience on the WRX. He said that Turbo or Supercharger that would decrease the life expectancy of the motor... he said the Turbo was the better way to go as the Supercharger is on being used all the time per say... I'm interested in 0-60 throw you back in the seat acceleration so the supercharger would be better for me. My BRZ is a daily driver, he said that I wouldn't likely get 100,000 miles out of it. He said that he's seen stock Subaru motors go early when the driver races/pushes it every day. I guess a new stock motor would be about $6000? I just want to be prepared for a new motor in 2-3 years if necessary. |
So let's see now... the car currently is only offered in NA formats with a high compression motor. You're trying to add more stress and HEAT to it via FI and you're expecting it to last 100000 miles? We don't even know that it would last 100000 miles stock. Already there's been a few FA20s that's stock and isn't running right...
That's a pretty tall order is it not? Any time you're adding boost / stress to the motor, it's going to wear at an accelerated rate. Granted that there are tons of variables out there, thinking this is going to be good for 100K is a bit of a pipe dream IMHO. Course, all this is supposition and conjecture I suppose... No one has reached 100K, I don't think. Some will boost and it was fail in 100 miles, see FRS300. Others will boost and it is running strong for thousands of miles, see Drift Office, lexusb3, SportsGuy83, King Tut, Dezoris, etc. YMMV, but if you take the precautions necessary for any FI application while includes safety margins like a boost cut built into your tune, AFR and boost gauge (most importantly know how to read them and understand what they mean), invest wisely in tuning and perform proper maintenance, I don't see why your car can't last as long as you want. There is no magical formula to engine life but there is a magical formula to fuking it up. Be kind to it and it will be kind to you. |
I'll add one other thing, these motors are new and they are working out some factory problems. Overall they are great motors, but stuff can happen. If you have an intake, tune, and full exhaust and your motor goes down due to some factory defect, you might have a chance of still getting coverage. If you have FI, whatever chance you had with arguing for warranty coverage goes out the window.

Most shopping-car engines are excessively worn by 100k miles. Adding boost to it will only accelerate that. It doesn't mean it won't still be functioning 'fine' at 100k, it just means things will be worn, performance won't be as good, it'll use more oil, etc.
