Radar Detector Hardwiring via MirrorTap / BlendMount
 

I recently just purchased a BlendMount and MirrorTap mostly because it seemed like the absolute easiest possible method of getting it hard wired into my car and setup in a way that I wouldn't have to worry about it.

So I ordered both based upon the recommendations on the website, than was sent an e-mail suggesting another MirrorTap part number instead and all was fine. First install happened to have lots of reboots of the radar detector and so I called up and got great customer service and eventually the shipped me another MirrorTap (2 days!) and now all is well!

So for those who want to know what exactly to order for their BRZ (I would assume it is exactly the same for the FR-S but I can't confirm this):

• BlendMount BBE-2000
• MirrorTap MT-2009

I haven't driven around at all yet with the new MirrorTap installed, but I can already tell the fitment is 100% better, I did remember reading a thread discussion that someone had bothered bending the pins and that worked for them, however I would definitely recommend the proper MirrorTap instead.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants to hardwire their radar detector. Realistically, anyone who has a radar detector probably wants to given the awesome locations of our power!

UPDATE: For those wondering which pins to "tap" for your radar detector, check out this image for a good start. This is for those of us who have the powered mirrors of course. If you use the other wire for ground your detector will only be powered assuming you are not in reverse, which isn't a big deal but annoying to hear the detector start up constantly.

Glad to hear that the MT-2009 worked - I was sent a MT-3009 last week and the pins apparently weren't long enough to make contact and accidentally busted after trying too many times. Some other options are on the way for me to try.

I assume you have the red pin connected to the black/white cable, and the black connected to the black cable immediately next to it?

Yea, the black with white striped wire for positive (red) and the one immediately next to it for negative (black). Also, I suppose I should mention that I have the homelink mirror. I'm pretty certain the wiring wouldn't change, but figured I would mention it.

I'll probably take some pictures this weekend of exactly how it turned out for those who want to see exactly how it looks installed.

The fit of the MT-2009 took effort to properly push into the "socket", and I just tried each side until I found the one that worked. For me this was the bottom of the wires (based upon who it plugs into the mirror). Once I found a side with a little bit of room it slid in without too much force or fuss.

Replacement MT-2009 worked great the first shot. So clean!

So the way I wired up my radar detector magically ended up wonky. I am assuming this is just a matter of choosing a different sent of wires to tap into, but wanted to see if others have this issue as well.

Whenever I put the car into reverse the detector looses power, which I assume is entirely because of which wires I tapped, but would love to have confirmation that others work properly.

Mine's doing that too - I was going to try using the other black wire, but haven't had a chance to tear that apart. My guess is, it might do the opposite on the other (power on ONLY if you're in reverse), which obviously isn't ideal. If i try it before you, I'll post my results...

Yea, the fact that it is only in reverse really makes it much less of a problem / annoyance and thus I haven't taken mine apart either. Though, maybe now isn't a bad time to give it a try.

The other wire is the trick, but for ground not positive. Here's a picture of my wiring.

so you guys end up using the MT-2009? i ordered the MT-3009 because the site recommended it... also how long is your wire? i was sent a 9" and dont remember given an option for longer

Use the MT-2009. Both of us previously tried the MT-3009 and it wasn't a perfect fit. It worked but it wasn't 100%. The MT-2009 fits snug and you won't have a problem with it loosing power ever. The website also recommended the 3009 for me, which they sent to me. I ended up asking for the 2009 instead and told them that the 2009 was the best for the these cars. Guess they didn't update their website yet.

thanks guys, lol yea i guess they didnt update their website.. the FRS & "2012 BRZ" recommended MT-2009 but the 2013++ recommended MT-3009.. i went with the MT-3009 because i didnt know better until i read your post. what was the difference between the 2009 and 3009? did they give you guys a hard time about replacing the wire? and shipping back out of pocket?

did you guys get the 9"? also did you tap to the plug on the back of the mirror or the plug that plugs into the dome in the headliner.. i would like to go into the headlight and use the plastic cover that goes over the oem wire..

The 3009 had thinner blade connectors I believe. Actually broke one when trying to get it to connect and stay put. 2009 was just effortless. They have very good customer service - If I recall, they covered shipping both ways for the replacement.

The 9" is what I got - went to the back of the mirror. Easy install (see http://imgur.com/9kT21P2 for pins to connect to if you have dimming/homelink mirror. No real reason to make a further run than that.
