Sounds like this is a good setup for anyone because it helps warm the oil faster, and acts as a regulator by distributing heat out among the system. Sounds also like it will maintain oil temps just fine for most applications.

The point that I read is that the stock coolant journals throughout the engine don't pull enough heat off the oil, so this oil cooler provides a mechanism for getting that accomplished. And the idea is that spikes in temperatures in any one area (fluids, chambers) can lead to engine failure, so distributing the heat out will allow for safer engine use at high thresholds.

The other point is that this kit doesn't increase the thermal capacity of the system because there is no addition of cooling surface area. If heatsoak was an issue then a larger radiator would be necessary. In the case that the oil regulator couldn't extract enough heat, and it was a bottleneck in cooling (coolant temps were ok, oil temps were heat soaked) then a dedicated oil cooler would be necessary. The good thing is that OEM oil regulator could work in conjunction with aftermarket oil coolers with the addition of a sandwich plate like with the Mishimoto example. In either case, with a radiator or with an aftermarket oil cooler, the system has increased its thermal capacity through the addition of more radiators/cooling surface area.

would a termostat plate still be needed for cooler climates or would the oem setup keep the temps up?

Unfortunately that is not a subject I am familiar with so I can't really comment.

As water going up faster than oil, it will rise the oil temp quicker. A radiator will low the temperature, that's why you then needs a thermostat plate.

have some data and comparisons for this kit when pushed hard. go with the throttle body routing

Has anyone run into coolant leaks with this setup? I burped my system with a spill free funnel and ran the car for 10-15 min until the air bubbles slowed way down.

The morning after the install I found a nice antifreeze puddle on the street under my BRZ. It appears to be a small leak.

No issues from the front pipe or connections off the oil cooler itself.

Then I found this at the bottom.

Luckily the nipple didn't seem to be exhibiting any issues. I was worried I'd have to deal with that... after loctiting it in.

Following the trail of dried coolant further, it looks like the smaller pipe and hose by the firewall is the source of the leak.

I'm struggling right now to get that little hose clamp back off but will end up replacing it with a standard one once I do.

Hey guys, while surfing the interwebs, looking for cheaper subaru parts stores I found this one. For people living in the southeast part of the US this would be a great place. Don't know if shipping will be more for the west coast, I doubt it, but the price shipped came to $268.54 shipped. Hope this helps.

I have an external oil cooler and the OEM together. It does not smack the hood.

hard to tell, but is that the racerX fabrication sandwich plate and spacer with the forester setup?

Just about to try out the throttle version install and wondering if there is any importance to the way the hoses hook up from the cooler to the throttle body (how to tell which goes to the inlet and which to the outlet) also what size hoses to use that fits the barb on the throttle nipple, read threw the thread one guy said 3/8" and others say 1/2"
thanks!

Hey everyone, I've got a fairly stupid question I'd like to ask!
I'm planning on installing the Forest XT oem oil cooler/ regulator but wanted to know if I could simply reuse my engine coolant, when I drain the system, instead of buying several containers of it. Being that the car is roughly 6mo old, I didn't see any reason it wouldn't work as long as I use a clean pan with no contaminants. Thoughts?

You can.
I did it twice using empty distilled water jar. You can connect hose from overflow tank to the tip of drain nipple then collect coolant straight to water jar. When I refill it, I filtered it just in case.

What did you use to filter the coolant?
