Looking at a 2003 Audi RS 6
 

So...

I just sold my STi. Wasn't a huge fan of the car. Always wanted a super saloon. The 2003 Audi RS 6 is very appealing. Not familiar with the car?

Right now, they're 10 years old and not terribly en vogue. But I don't care. They can be had for $18-30k dependent on mileage, condition and private sale or dealer retail. Of course when they break, they're still an $86,000 car. I'll be taking the necessary precautions.

Before I make the plunge, I just wanted to see what alternatives were out there for the $20k range. I want power. I want comfort. 4 doors not necessary. AWD is nice but not necessary. Obviously there's the above-mentioned M5, E55 AMG, and S Type R. There's also the CL55 AMG, but my close friend has one already. There's the Corvette, but the GM parts bin interior is atrocious. There's the 911, but I dislike the 996 body (with the exception of the Turbo, which is not affordable).

Any other options? :)

Anyways, what about the 997? They look pretty good and can be had cheap, though repairs are crazy expensive.

You really gotat drive one first, those RS cars can be very different for some guys to like. Not everyone likes them for a reason, but i'm sure it's stupid fun.

Personally i've been trying to convince my father to buy the RS7, he budges a bit but he just has a hard time buying a car he can't test drive. Might have to bail, unless theres one we could test drive soon (None coming to US till Dec)

A ten year old rs6 is for people who like to work on over-engineered technology that costs an arm and a leg. You dont want to hear it but this isnt a great idea. CTSV comes with a 6, also the G8.

CtsV comes with a "6"? As in a six cylinder engine? Lol no, it never did.

No man :sigh:, I started by saying I wouldnt consider the rs6 because its only an auto. But there are performance sedans that have a 6 [speed transmission]

LOL well I guess that statement doesn't make sense... I just want a fast car. 4 doors or two.

Test driving one tomorrow! I had a 2012 S4 which I loved. Rode in an RS 6 before but have yet to drive one. It's a 4100lb pig, but I have the BRZ too, let's not forget.

This is one of the first things on the agenda. The A6 6 speed manual holds more power/torque, and allows fitment of (ever-so-slightly) bigger turbos. And of course being able to row your own.

The RS 6 is for people who want a fast AWD turbo car but don't want the wind noise, crappy seats, interior panel rattles, and grafted-on boy racer wing and hood scoop of a WRX STi ;) And come on, bragging rights are cool, too!
-You have a turbo flat 4? I have a bi-turbo 40 valve V8.
-You have 4 piston Brembos? I have 8 piston Brembos.
-You have 300hp? I have 450hp (and get the same gas mileage)
-Your timing belt has to be done every 100k? Mine has to be done every 40k...oh, well that part's not so cool.

The CTS-V also has the aforementioned GM parts-bin interior, but I have considered it. I have never in my life seen a G8 with a manual gearbox, but they don't appeal to me either way.

That doesnt look like a very straightforward or common conversion, drop engine at least...so unless you go at it yourself it can be near half the cost of the actual car. Dont get me wrong the car is a great performance luxury saloon but its going to cost you again and again all along the way.

The g8 gxp only came in manual, there were less than 2,000 sold in the one year it was offered before pontiac went under, thats bragging rights. I can see this isnt the direction you are interested in though; seems like an rs6 and all of its audi-tastic pleasantries is in your future. CTSV isnt all that partsbin tho.

OK...stay with me on this...

SRT8 Charger. Fast and can be had used for small amounts.

I had a SRT8 Challenger and Loved it...but my DD SUV died...which led to me trading the Challenger in for a new 4 Runner and BRZ.

Anyway, I always liked the RS6 personally. I have seen then chipped etc etc and they become silent sleepers rather easily.

I also want to say the Auto-xmission in those is actually nice and has some feedback (according to the reviews I have read).

It's been done and documented numerous times. "Straightforward" is not a term I'd use to describe working on an Audi but the A6 transmission and all of it's components bolt right up with the exeption of the parts listed in that kit that I linked.


Hmmm, I kinda forgot about the Charger; maybe I'll poke around Autotrader and see what's out there. Not gonna lie, I wouldn't mind having a big ol' gawddamn 'Merican V8!

Ugh, can't do it man! Even the Chrysler 300 SRT8 interior looks like a rental car; forget the Charger!

G8 GT? GXP are still expensive.

The RS6 is a great car, but timing belt maintenance means pulling the engine. And apparently that needs to be done every 35k. Fine if you can DIY, if not it's probably about 1500+ at an independent shop or 3k+ at a dealer.
