Hahaha Tsuchiya-san definitely does not speak English. Props to him for trying, but why didn't they just translate from Japanese? Also, has anyone seen videos of him drifting the 86 yet? You would think since he's like the godfather of AE86 drifting you'd see him in more new 86's

Wow, did he say that everything that comes out for the 86 in the future would be compatible with the first year models? I wonder what kind of things they are going to add to the car.

Hopefully they're borrowing the Subaru philosophy of car design (likely since Subaru did most of the technical engineering). There's a saying "Subarus are like Legos". From the mid 90s to 07 almost everything in the Impreza was interchangeable. Want to put an 07 STI powertrain in a '97 Impreza L? No welding needed, everything will bolt in. Sometimes you need to find parts from the Legacies (driveshaft, rear tophats), and you'll have to modify the wiring harness for the new ECU and engine, but you really can mix-and-match with most Subarus. And that still holds true for a lot of stuff after 07 and across model lines.

To give a real-world example, when I swapped a JDM 6mt into my USDM WRX, the JDM wiring harness for the transmission was not compatible with the USDM chassis. But I was able to take the wiring harness AND sensors out of my US 5mt and just put them in the Japanese 6mt with no modifications.

If the BRZ follows this trend of Lego-ness (we're already seeing 08+ WRX parts in the BRZ build) then really, any changes done to the car in the future should bolt right into our first-year models.

Wow, that sounds really awesome. That means like 5 years from now, when my transmission breaks, I can buy the transmission from the newest 86 and put it in. Or if they come out with a better LSD I can swap that in too. That takes away my fear of buying a first year release only to have them add tonnes of incompatible upgrade a couple of years down the line.

I would think so. It would run counter to a lot of how Subaru designs cars to do otherwise.

It also means that mods designed for the upper end car should work too. Hopefully the BRZ is the beginning of another long line of cars we can draw from for mods.
