2016 FR-S vs 2016 MX-5 Coupe

I made that up. :-)

But seriously. I see my little FR-S as competition for the MX-5 Coupe that Mazda never made. I never liked the MX-5's styling or lack of cargo space enough to buy one. In my mind, the FR-S and BRZ are perfect, they're fun AND practical. I know that there are a lot of mixed emotions about our little D4-S 2.0l boxer engine. So here's my question: If Mazda rolled out an MX-5 Coupe in three years, would anyone jump ship and go over to Mazda?

I've got some brand loyalty myself, but I thought this would make an interesting discussion if it turns into one. :-)

New RX-7 won't let that happen.

They did make a Miata coupe (they made like 300 of them...)

they looked a lot like the Mazda MX-6
Google image it.

I didn't know that! I wonder if the twins will motivate Mazda to try it again?

Haha. Wow it's weird! The rear reminds me a bit of an old Opel GT.

Yeah, I really liked how it looked.

With the power hard top...I doubt they will redo it...but if it was available...I would have strongly considered it.

I suppose you're right. I'm not the kind of driver that would notice a difference in the stiffness of a chassis, I don't mind a power folding hardtop at all. I just prefer the additional cargo capacity of a coupe for a long term daily driver. I love the twin's fold flat rear seat. :-)

....and always plan waaaay ahead.

Wow, you learn something new every day!

And that Miata coupe really looks nice. And probably less expensive than the PRHT that they have now.

Mazda made a Miata coupe concept. However they never produced one for sale. If I'm incorrect on this, please point to resources saying otherwise (b/c I'm curious). Google images are not proof alone.

Never released in the US, Japan only, incredibly limited numbers. Could be thought of as a specialty built car, not a production car due to the circumstances.

From Wikipedia:
"Also in 2003, a division of Mazda in Japan released the Roadster Coupé, with an fixed hardtop roof. The body structure was reworked to incorporate the roof and gave a substantial increase in chassis rigidity with a weight increase of 10 kg (22 lb). Production was limited to 179 units for Japan only. This was to become one of the rarest forms of the MX-5."

The new Mazda MX5 is to share a platform with an Alfa Romeo, all to be built by Mazda in Japan.

There will be a coupe version I would bet since Alfa always markets both versions.

However, Alfa just released their baby 4C so who knows what room may be left under that car for a similar sized but much cheaper metal coupe.

I'd certainly look seriously at any Alfa/Mazda JV product.

Alfa built the Spider for 26 years without offering it as a coupe, I don't know that they'll change that for the new version. Some of the forgettable fwd convertibles they made in the last fifteen to twenty years were available as coupes (and you could count the 8C, I suppose) but I'd be surprised if we see a coupe of the new MX-5/AR car.

Miatas are for old people IMO. I am sorry if I offended any old folks, the twins scream "mod me", while the Miata scream "take the top down so you can feel the wind on your bald head".
