BRZ/FR-S vs AMC Gremlin
 

Since we are always comparing compact RWD cars, I figured I should cross shop an American Classic.

After researching a lot, I eventually bought a BRZ, but it was a very tough choice.

I don't feel the need to talk about the shortcomings of power of the BRZ/FR-S

This Gremlin could go 0-60 in 10.4 SECONDS!

Oh yeah another great feature...it weighs a lot and that helps the car in a cross-wind.

American Motors won the "truth in advertising" award that year by giving their new car that model name.

Probably should have added an "s" to the end for full accuracy though.

The Pacer beats the Gremlin for performance and style though. Nice and stable in corners due to its wide track.....

Actually, it wasn't a pos. They were very reliable and got what for an american car of the time was really good gas mileage. They handled like crap, but with the big engine bay, guys could swap all kinds of engines into them so they were surprisingly popular at drag strips. Light car + big engine = fun. Typical of that era though, the 304 V8 only made like 150 horsepower from the factory because of the new smog regulations.

0-60 for the 304 V8 models was somewhat quicker than that, but still quite slow...
Still, it *was* lighter-weight than an FR-S, and with a factory 5.0 v8 there is potential!

Randall AMC in Mesa, Arizona modified new 304 V-8 Gremlins by swapping in a 401 mill with headers and adding a handling package and exterior badging. Available with a 4-speed manual or 3-speed TorqueFlite, this 2400-pound buggy was light on its feet, capable of running the quarter in the 13′s at over 105 mph. Just 21 were made from 1972-1974 and all this goodness could be your for just $2995.00!

Half the price of a (slower) Corvette, not bad! About where the FR-S is...

That engine bay is massive!

What's all the smoke from? Tires? Boy, We have come a long way in braking. That car was all over the place under braking. That had awful body roll.

Test driver doesn't know how to modulate. For shame...
