Subaru BRZ Japanese Market Deliveries Pushed to Next Year
 

The Japanese daily Nikkei is reporting that due to overwhelming demand (orders), Japanese market deliveries of the Subaru BRZ will be pushed to January 2013.

The Gunma factory is unable to keep up with the production necessary to keep deliveries (which are already four times the amount that Fuji Heavy Industries had anticipated) on schedule.

This comes less than one month after the BRZ and FR-S began production last month on March 16th, and only two weeks after the BRZ went on sale in Japan on March 28th.

No word on whether the FR-S (86/GT-86) will be subject to the same delivery delays, although that seems very possible given its high demand as well. It's also unclear yet how this will affect other markets' deliveries, including the US and Canada.

Ouch.

My guess is that there may be some delay, but nothing that significant. Subaru is probably having to delay the JDM deliveries significantly in order to maintain at least most of their commitments to foreign markets.

They were expecting to have a few of them sitting on the lots in Japan. This isn't gonna happen at this point. I know the Subaru dealer by me is getting 35 cars, and the week before last they had 3 left. I'm betting zero now. My Scion dealer is scheduled to get 6, I'm 3rd in line there.

In the end this article is amazing news. It means this car is reinvigorating the market. All the already slotted cars should still go out, but don't expect to find them sitting on the lots unless some buyers flake out on their pre-orders.

They are delaying delivery in Japan. They received more orders than they can fill based on the allotment for 2012. They need to hit all other world-wide markets still, so they had to cut off deliveries in Japan to maintain the ability to fulfill those commitments.

They committed to producing 100,000 cars this year. I'm pretty sure all allotments for dealers in the US that were pre-ordered will be filled, but there basically won't be any floater cars, or at least very few.

I highly doubt they're able to produce 100k cars this year then if they have trouble just keeping pace with the Japanese market.

Well the Japanese market is 4x greater than they expected. The US market is most likely already sold out. You figure 20k cars for the US. Maybe 12k if Scion is only getting 6k like Subaru. 30k for Japan, 20k for Europe, and another 10-15k for other parts of Asia and you're almost at 100k already.

That's incredible. Maybe a wake-up call to competitors as well?

Car manufacturers have been telling themselves for so long, "Nobody wants sports cars. It's a small niche market." And it is clear now that even Subaru and Toyota have underestimated the demand for a new affordable sports car. So MAKE MORE SPORTS CARS! We have enough boring grocery getters on the market!

Hmmm its a possibility, but at the same time, I feel that sports coupes wouldn't be produced in such high amounts. I'm just looking at (admittedly not the most scientific method) the numbers posted on wikipedia's site and the MX-5's highest global year was the second around 76k. The s2k's grand sales total was roughly 100k. Kinda curious about the Celica's number.

At any rate, I don't think Subaru's factory for the FT86 platform is that big to begin with. It made kei car's and I'm curious about the total numbers that they produced.

Oh well, your numbers do work, just I don't see 100k possible by the end of this year.

I think they're having issues meeting the demand even at those numbers for the Japanese market. Japan is vastly different from the US though. They just spend spend spend. The US is actually a bit more frugal in terms of spending. We save money for retirement. The Japanese just work until they die.
