Aftermarket Exhaust Options

I'm still a few weeks away from ordering a car, but just wanted some info on exhaust options. I see the Toyota exhaust options are ridiculously priced - R20k for a back box only (or so it seems). I don't mean to sound cheap, but I'm sure some of the local exhaust shops can do a full end to end decatted exhaust, with some decent headers for less than R10k.

However, got a few questions:

1) Technically, an exhaust is a bolt-on part. Would Toyota give any hassle with the warranty claims if the car has an aftermarket exhaust on it. (Obviously, this is for claims of stuff other than the exhaust).

2) Subaru's claim of 7KW is actually quite interesting on exhaust only. Is the stock exhaust that restrictive? Based on my limited experience, getting that much more power out of an exhaust only option might mean that the car may have reduced low-end torque - something entirely possible with a NA car if one "fiddles" with the exhaust. Anyone locally (Gauteng) got experience with building decent exhausts for these cars yet care to comment?

Go to Subaru and buy the BRZ exhaust, they've put a lot of R&D into it and the quality is very good.

lucius 10-15-2013 12:57 PM

would be interesting to hear what the BRZ exhaust costs. My Perrin catback was around 17k. Thats everything included, shipping, tax, etc....

I think Jacques has a powerflow system. Was only about R2500.00..

I don't think Toyota will have a problem, until something goes wrong. They will try and blame the exhaust...lol

I went to Subaru and got a quote for the BRZ Performance Exhaust was quoted R5500 including VAT, was shocked when I saw the price was expecting R10 000 + for the system

That is pretty good for a "dealer" price, compared to the ridiculous R20k Toyota is charging for the TRD exhaust.

lucius 11-12-2013 08:36 AM

..

One of the guys here in Cape Town has the Subaru exhaust and he is loving it....

GeeTee86 11-13-2013 01:02 PM

Which is possibly more than the amount of BRZ's running around in GP? :happyanim:

Moe 11-14-2013 03:10 AM

Is the Subaru exhaust a direct bolt on, or do you need to cut/weld anywhere?

JouMaSeHoes 11-14-2013 03:30 AM

direct bolt on.

R5500??!!! I went to Subaru Cape Town, they quoted me R7500 with labour and vat...

Also, two question, with the PowerFlow exhaust, any performance increase?
and what about the warranty?

Toyota Cape Town and Table View branch said that if I change the exhaust, it would void the whole engine warranty...which is why I'm still hesitating to do anything to the car...

Thanks
Key

Every Toyota dealership has a different story when it comes to modifications and warranty. If you change your exhaust you should not lose your warranty on your engine, but it seems to come to the discretion of the dealership.

Subaru put some R&D into the exhaust, so might get the best performance with a standard engine.

keymaster 01-19-2014 10:49 AM

hmm....but R7500 for an exhaust system...
Might consider it later stage

Anyone here did a dyno on the BRZ exhaust? Because I still can't believe the 7kw increase from a bolt on exhaust only system...

DSport Magazine has done an extensive test on bolt on exhaust systems. It's very possible, especially with the catless systems.

We're not talking 7kw at the wheels. Ryan has done a dyno, but there was a software update done between 1st dyno and 2nd dyno so the results are useless unfortunately.

Die$eL 02-06-2014 06:29 AM

I assume the BRZ system still has a cat.

Is there any significant gain from removing it?

Nope, no cat in BRZ system but the monitored cats in the header obviously remain.

Removing a restriction such as a cat should have a benefit.

Fish Eagle 02-06-2014 11:20 AM

I've got no cats except a cheater, and it's great.
Feels wide open and very free-flow, and I love it!! :D

But, it's not great to start up inside a garage, because half-burnt, un-catted, un-leaded fumes are really bad...
Both smell-wise and health-wise (I think).

But, when you plant your right foot, and get rewarded with a very superior mind-blowing sound, who gives a sh*t about the tree huggers... :party0030:

Edited to add:
Oops, that could be interpreted as an environmentally insensitive statement, and quite inappropriate.
You're probably right, and I apologise.
Nevertheless, me and Jeremy Clarkson and the Stig dont' give a sh*t about that, so suck on it.

I'll plant some trees next week, maybe... :iono:

I live in the largest man made forest in the world. In order to be ecologically friendly and return it to what nature intended, I have responsibility to kill some trees :)

JouMaSeHoes 02-07-2014 02:31 AM

I have 15ha of Carbon Offset, so greenies can suck my ... um .... uncatted tailpipe

keymaster 02-08-2014 07:32 AM

I've wondered how much will a full titanium exhaust system cost? R25k?
Because I'm trying to shave off as much weight as possible on the car...I will need to lose some kg myself as well...lol

Regards

Where did you get the cheater?

Came with my conversion.
It's a tiny cat & O2 sensor, that actually functions as a cat, but it's useless.
It tells the ECU that all's well on the eco front, and don't worry about the trees and the greenies... :D

When I'm not hooning in my car, I hug bunnies and plant trees, so it's OK. :happyanim:

Hahahaha. u guys are crazy.
Thanks for the info though.

Here in SA the government has bigger things to worry about than us removing the CAT.
