How to get a personalized(custom) license plate in NJ

Hi all,

Sorry If there was already a thread about this and am re-posting this thread, if so please direct me to the thread :D

So it's been a while since I got my BRZ and I thought I would get a personalized license plate. But the words from DMV is somewhat vague and I do not know what I'm faced with.

Here are instructions from the NJ DMV:

"Personalized plates, also known as vanity plates, are a great way to stand out from the crowd―not to mention entertain other motorists. Within reason and good taste, you can choose a letter and number combination that individualizes your ride.

A personalized plate must have at least three letters and a maximum of seven characters (letters and numbers). You may put your name or a message on your plate for a one-time fee of $50, plus the regular registration fee.

To obtain an application for a personalized plate, visit your nearest MVC Agency or call (888) 486-3339 to have a form sent to you. Mail the completed application along with the fee to the address on the form.

Or, apply for a personalized plate online by following the instructions provided. If you lease your vehicle, you can't use this method."

But my question would be, I did not lease my BRZ- I financed it.

I know finance and lease are two different things but if I did not straight-out buy the vehicle would I still be under the category of "leasing?"

I just wanted to know before I go ahead and request a personalized license plate online.

And I'd assume I have to send my old license plate back to the DMV?

But how? Does it have to be in-person? :)

Thanks in advance for all yall' help! :thanks:

No, Leasing is basically borrowing a car for an extended period of time from the dealership.

Financing means the car is yours, you just owe money to a particular bank. Said bank has the right to take your asset(the car in this case) if you can't make payments.

As for the NJ license plates, you can find it on Google just look up "custom NJ license plates" and you should be able to figure out how that's done. I live in NY so I can order it online. I don't know how it is in Jersey.

Does it tell you instantly if they will give you the plate or does it have to be verified?

I just ordered it online and my credit card was charged, but it said they'll let me know if the plate will get approved of in few days.

So to answer your question you have to wait as they don't give you the immediate approval.

Do you know if it was denied because of the "FML" part or because it was taken?
