O'Sh*t Bars?
I've searched and can't seem to find anything on this...Perhaps because I don't know the technical term for these handles but we've always called them "OH SH*T! Bars" due to the fact that you really only grab on to them when you're flying around corners...
After that description I'm sure you can guess my next question....Are these available for our car? Do you need custom ones or can you just get generic ones put in? I don't need them for myself but my girlfriend always goes to grab for it when I'm havin some fun :burnrubber: *For anyone who still doesn't know what I'm talking about...they are the handles that most cars have above the driver+passenger window |
You know, that was one of the first complaints made about my car by a couple of my friends. The lack of those bars was a pretty serious concern. I told them to use the one on the door, but apparently it's not the same. I'll say that this is probably something you will have to make yourself. I'm betting a shop might be able to do it, but as far as commercial sale, I doubt it. You'd have to anchor it into the roof and make it match. That's a lot of work for a simple product.

I have seen on the inter webs this is because of Side-impact air bags... don't quote me though....
|
good points good points...too bad because although I sit comfortably in my seat even if I drift a bit the passenger always will have a harder time as they don't get to hold onto a steering wheel haha
|
I personally miss them because I wear suits at my job and sometimes I like to keep a spare set of clothes. When I change I have no where to hang my suits and they get thrashed. :sigh:
|
...short of hanging onto the door handle and nestling into the bucket seats, this is the fun of being a passenger in this car.

My friends call em "Jesus bars", similar reasons to your name. :)

Haven't come to the situation where I need it but I used to hang my suit in my Mazda3 so now that you mention it they would be good for that as well Quote:

The items at the following link may not be exactly what you are thinking about, but I was impressed with some of the items especially for older folks, like me. The one that comes closest to an o shit bar, but is not permanent and not very stable, is their "Car Caddie".

I just realized that those "Car Caddies" won't work on the twins because there is nothing above the window. Duh.
|
I just went out and sat in the passenger seat.
The only things I could grab onto while sitting are the door handle and the driver's seat belt receiver. I felt pretty secure that way, but there was no driver, so I don't know if the seat belt receiver is accessible when the driver is in the seat, too. |

They are called Assist Handles if you are looking up a part inventory. (Though the techs usually just refer to them as grab handles).

Every modern toyota I've ridden in has had grab handles above the window or on the A pillar... does anyone with other Subarus know if it's a Subaru thing? Or maybe a sports car thing...? Or just a Twin thing. :iono: |
Not a big deal for me. I never use them even as a passenger

My celica doesn't have them either

Don't really need them.....mrs humfrz's hands are busy clasped together in prayer and her eyes are shut tight .... http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...es/driving.gif

The FRS comes standard with them .... they are on the doors. If you are sitting properly in the seat and bracing with your feet on the floor and have your right arm resting on the arm rest and hand grabbing the handle and left elbow/upper arm bracing the seat bolster - it's better at keeping you in place than a useless overhead grab handle would.
|
Tell your passenger to man up and move their seat forward and use their legs to brace for corners.
With your legs properly braced and how supportive these seats are, you don't have to do a damn thing with your arms... Heck tell her to sit there and text while in the middle of a powerslide or something. |
I find reclining the seat a bit more than usual helps in dissipating the G forces.

This is one of the funniest threads, LOL oh sh*t bars...
|
I just can not see the value of holy shit handles in a car of any kind other then a luxury long distance car. Sure in my 4x4 plenty of use to "climb" up into, but on this car no that would be saying (farm) just abit too much IMO....;)
|
Yeah I agree not necessary but just sort of a nice luxury to have
as someone mentioned before especially for hanging a suit/clothes they are nice...I took another look above our windows though and there really isn't a nice, flat spot where you could mount them anyway Looks like I'll be telling the wifey to suck it up! |
Actually... oh shit handles might be useful for entry/exit of the car.
I find some passangers don't know how to get out of the car without puttjng fingerprints everywhere or grabbing the glass :| |

The car being so low makes it difficult to simply get out without using your hands |

Interesting this thread popped up because I was sitting in mine yesterday at a light and the thought came to me that it would be cool to replace the passenger knee pad, and the inside trim piece on the dash console, down to the center console with a piece that had an integrated hand hold in it, ala the C7 Corvette and some of the current supercars.
I know easier said than done.... |

Install a roll cage and let them hang onto that. :-)

I've considered one of those coat racks but they are ugly as hell. Another problem is that there is so little space in the back that the jacket won't fit in the footwell behind the seat, so it gets all screwed up... |
Damn, first world problems lol.
Love the thread. I've had plenty of complaints that there are no Oh shit bars (we call them that too) but really I just laugh at the person in the passenger and keep driving how I'm driving. I use the "gangster lean" method too. Helps brace you better ;) |
My DD is a modified Jeep JK with "O-SHIT" bars/handles/straps everywhere, mostly for reassurance. Have a sign on the dash: Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle at all times! Trust me, it needs to be there.
I have ridden as passenger in my BRZ. Didn't like it at all! Can't blame passengers for grabbing at things when the driver is pulling lateral Gs. It's a driver's car, all the way. Heck, maybe I'll pull out the other seats. |
