Considering relocating In San Diego, opinions please!!!

Ok guys, first things first I was born and bred in New York City. Never got the experience of traveling to the West Coast but I've heard from numerous amount of people I know it's where you want to be! Researched a lot of cities in California and I'm hearing for the most part San Diego is favored. I've been researching San Diego and the weather sounds terrific; blows NYC away on that end. Looking into city jobs for San Diego and thinking about enrolling for Police Officer Recruit and eventually after graduation upon academy(Hopefully) become an actual Police Officer. If anyone has more insight upon that, that would be amazing the more information the merry! Also if someone happens to be on the job I'd like to ask you questions if that's ok! So i have two strong hobbies as well; I am a barber; have been for the past 5 Years professionally; but a total of 10 years in doing so. I also love to branch off in training such as Boxing, judo, bjj, wrestling, etc. I've come across 2 powerhouse MMA gyms in San Diego which I'd love to check out. So my goal is to enroll for this Police Officer recruit position; hopefully get granted the job; as well on the side work in the Barbershop just to have some extra cash being that I am completely relocating and financially it will take a toll upon me in the beginning; but as well hope to find some time to train! If anyone can give me any insights on San Diego please! As far as rent's concerned, how much will a 1-2 Bedroom cost in a good area nearby Chula Vista. I know I'm throwing a lot out there but; I'm all ears to whatever you guys have to say!

Sorry guys, I know my title says "In San Diego"; not sure why I wrote In but I cannot figure out how to change the title "To San Diego", forgive me for my improper grammar!

Chula Vista will probably run you between 700 and 1200 a month. I really can't recommend it however...you're better off getting something smaller in another area if budget is a concern.

This may help you in determining where to live:

good luck on the police academy, i might be going into the same route as well but over in orange county since there's one like 10 mins away from my house. still debating on if i want to do firefighter/emt or police. san diego is a nice place, and in socal we're pretty spoiled with weather. i would recommend saving at least 3-4 months worth of rent and expenses before moving here. but definitely use the site gen recommended.

San Diego is pretty awesome. Might want to visit before thinking about moving though. :-)

As for training bjj, unless you're really freaking awesome at bjj, that's probably a no go. SoCal has high end black belts all over the place. Same thing with judo (with the added issue (if you're trying to make money) that a lot of the judo places are non profit (sun valley judo in LA charges $10/month for example. I go to sawtelle and it's $90/3 months +$15 per additional family member)).

I was contemplating with either San Diego or Huntington Beach but; what I don't understand maybe you can clarify this for me is; I can pretty much go to San Diego's academy for a police officer and once I graduate become a police officer anywhere in California that's hiring? If that's the case I would strongly want to be in Huntington or Beverley Hills; whats your take on that? Only reason I'm choosing PD over FD is because I feel PD is quicker and easier to obtain; Good Luck with what you decide!

Hey what's up man; being that you live in SoCal what city would you recommend? Btw; checked out Sawtelle's website and those credentials of the Sensei's are LEGIT! I can only imagine how lethal their Randori is! You might have misread what I stated but; I am not planning on opening a gym; just want to pursue training in Cali if I make the big move. Would you happen to know about any big name Wrestling schools? Ive trained Judo for quite sometime; unfortunately never had the opportunity to Wrestle; would love to give that a shot! As of now I am strictly looking into MMA schools that combine Standup, Takedown and groundwork in one facility; and of course Sparring!

im not too sure on this myself as i've heard different things from different people. but once you enroll in an academy i believe they help you find a department that would want to hire you, then you actually go through the whole academy and go onto the job. i've heard that and i've also heard that you can pretty much go to any city that's hiring. i would be going to the one in huntington beach as well if i decide on that route.

here is the school website for more help

That's like asking what movie I would recommend. What I like has almost no bearing on what you might like. ;). So what do you like?

Sawtelle is not lethal as far as randori - for that, you'd go to gokor's (coowned by judo gene lebelle, judo home of Manny and Karo, and where Ronda rousey spent much time early on) or LA Tenri (legendary randori). As for wrestling, not much in the way of wrestling schools (anywhere) -outside college clubs, mma schools are probably your best bet, and of course there are tons of mma schools out here.

As a charter pilot, I have seen quite a few American cities. I LOVE almost all the Pacific coast cities.
San Diego, Carlsbad, Orange County, select parts of LA, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, The SF Bay area, Eureka, Portland, Seattle, Vancouver (yes, not U.S.), and smaller towns in between.
Most have quite high COL, and no doubt my perception is biased, but as a place to hang your hat, you could do way worse. Like say.. New Jersey.
And if you can't make it here, there's always Vegas. If Vegas doesn't work, there's always Reno :D

Go Firefighter - I did - it was by far the best decision I ever made
