Is this normal?

Everything is lined up per the DIY, the silver clamps go on and off easily, all the teeth are lined up and I have been out for a few drives and it feels and sounds fine. Still, never had the border of an air filter peek out. it looks worse in the picture than what it is, as the box is actually closed and the seal seems air tight. The entire filter elements is even on all sides and completely contained within the airbox, but the polyurethan wants to peek out on some of the sides......

is this normal to see the polyurethane a little bit?

No, you should not be able to see the filter edges. It's not locked in fully from the looks of it or the filter needs to be adjusted a bit more.

i read on here a couple other people with the TRD had similar problems, just trying to revisit the issue. are you sure the exposure is not part of the seal...

followed the DIY exactly and still got this

My TRD airbox is different, has raised red TRD lettering. Are there different, or even counterfeit ones?

I think you might need to flip the air filter over the other way for it to fit properly.

ok....looks like I will have to install it for the 3rd time.....these air filters are a bitch!!!! its like impossible to get it to sit properly the fit is down to the smallest millimeter. kinda ridiculous

EDIT: just reinstalled it for the 3rd time, it has to be normal i measured everything.....someone on here has to have the TRD with the same problem or another air filter with similar unless the TRD is a faulty designed filter maybe....

The TRD CAI fits just fine. The TRD filter inside the stock box maybe doesn't fit snug. After looking more at the pictures, it doesn't even look like that filter fits the airbox like it should.

The actual filter element fits perfect but the polyproplene surround seems a little big, again, maybe its that way to create a seal, I am not sure, maybe I will call TRD

I would, I have never seen a filter not fit inside an airbox and seal completely with the poly material sticking out. That's a sign the filter doesn't fit the box unless its by design and is still sealed. Still doesn't look right though. Those are supposed to be sealed, tight connections.
