Trunk swap with VIN question

I ordered a BRZ Limited, but considering that you don't have a spoiler delete option, I'd have to swap a trunk with a Premium (unless there's an easier way). Anyways, I noticed that the trunk has a VIN sticker and it looks like once you remove it, it's not going back on anywhere.

How would you transfer that over back to your new trunk?

My dealer has speculated that the rear spoiler might be a port installed item for the Limited. I've included spoiler deletion as a special request with my order and will report back with the result.

That's a good question. I know the old WRX spoilers which were always an option were installed at the port, but the STI wings which are not optional were factory installed, at least the holes in the trunks were drilled at the factory...

As for the ViN swap I guess to make it legit you could note it somewhere and keep it in the car, or make a new sticker. I don't think folks are going to be too bent out of shape about it...

or get the trd lip wing. i think it covers the holes where factory brz wings attach to. at least that's what im hoping

You don't. The VIN decals (as you noticed) are tamper-proof.

Having a non-stock trunk will raise questions when you sell the car, no doubt about it. I personally would be very hesitant to buy a car that had a replacement trunk and a story about "I didn't like the wing -- but I don't have the original to show you." My suggestion would be to keep the original lid tucked safely away while you run the slick (no wing) lid. Then you can pull it out when you sell the car, and it's an added bonus.

at least half of the impreza trunks are swapped on the road. no one cares and no one even gives a 2nd look. and you will not have any problem selling it.
same thing if you get in a accident, you won't have matching vin number

This.

Why would a dealer look at EVERY part of your car and be like 'door.. check... side mirror.. check... ooooohhhp... this isn't the original trunk... fuck off.'

Who cares. Just swap it and move on.

Longhorn248 04-07-2012 10:46 PM

Swap it and be done with it, worrying about the trunk VIN is ridiculous.

That's what I'm hoping for.

I would think that if you documented the swap with photos, etc that no one would care.

There will probably be some that care.

I bet 95% of car buyers don't even know the vin is printed on the trunk. I bet 99.99% don't look at the VINs on each part when they buy a used car.

If you really care about the VIN, for around $500 you could have the holes filled and the trunk repainted. Or, for that same approximate $500 you could drill holes and add a spoiler.

Yeah most don't even know. We traded my wife's STI-trunk-swapped WRX in at a Subaru dealer, they didn't even ask about it.

If you auction off your mint condition, one owner, low mileage, stored in an argon filled bubble 2013 BRZ 60 years from now, you'll want that "matching numbers" trunk lid. Other than that, it's not going to matter. In fact, the future owner of your car will probably say "You swapped the trunk? Sweet! I hate that stupid little spoiler. Thanks for saving me the trouble."
