WRX/STI turbos on FA20

Has anyone else thought about building a kit around the existing subi factory fitment turbos. There is such a huge selection between the OE turbos and then the OE bolt in's.

This might be more for people who want more mellow street kits and not big HP goals. I personnally love the TD04 on the older 2.0L

Crawford thought about it and did it. I haven't seen one car with their turbo kit yet though other than their shop car.

There is a local shop that is playing with the idea as we speak :)

I have an old TD04 and I have held it in place in the engine bay and it physically fits nice. A bell mouth down pipe may take up a good amount of space but thats another concern.

The variety of OE turbos can be picked up cheap on subi forums. The vf in my last sti was pretty nice as well, granted thats an obvious 2.5L. I think a TD04 and external waste gate would be fun. Only problem I have run into is that there is not much published info on the stock turbos, trim and what not. So seeing if they could be a match with the FA is probably more a guess and check scenario.

AVO uses their own branded variation of a TD05 18G

I think their first batch is going out soon. I talked to them at subie fest and they stated they have 10 almost done 8 are sold ( I'm not sure if my #s are right as I was really not paying proper attention )

Ps: I'm not a fan of Crawford but I just thought I'd share

The TD04 is too small to bother with. The reason people aren't using WRX/STI turbos is because better options exist with a standard flange. I wouldn't pick any of the IHI turbos over something like a GT2871R. More efficient, less boost needed to make good power, better spool, etc.

Bingo. Stock suby fitment turbos are a horrible compromise. Unless you are buying a used turbo, they are expensive as well. You might as well just get a Garrett.

Buying a low milage used turbo from a WRX owner doing an upgrade is the whole point.

I think someone smart will eventually offer such a kit (basically an Avo copy) with open tune for less than $2k sans turbo.

exactly, I sold my old sti turbo for pennies. The only down side I see is that dudes wont be able to brag to other dudes that they run a GT5million turbo.

When i upgraded my sti turbo to a larger garrett I regretted it, I know the engines are very different but the smaller turbo was more my style
