Spots coming up through paint
 

So this has me perplexed.

I have small spots all over my car in the paint. They are barely noticeable during the day, but really stand out at night when light is reflecting off the car.

Here are two pictures, it is hard to see but they are there around around where the light is reflecting off the car. Linked them because they are very large.

I tried washing the car and it did nothing so I tried clay baring it and nothing. The finish is as smooth as glass, you cant feel them, only see them. They look like small holes in the paint under the clear coat, almost like something is trying to push its way out.

I bought the car in July 2012, it has been garage kept its whole life and driven very infrequently in the winter. The spots have really just become noticeable in the last few weeks.

They are also all over the car, very uniform. They are everywhere the car is painted...plastic, steel, aluminum, doesn't matter.

Anyone else have this happen? I have an appointment with the service manager to look it over, but not until next week.

When you see him ask him if his prep department gave the car a chemical wash to remove rail dust. Any car transported on a train will have fine particles of rail dust (metal) settle on their car. If it's not chemically cleaned off it will, over time, turn to rust. It's most noticeable on white cars but it happens to all cars that ride on a train.

All dealerships are aware of this but only a few take the necessary step doing this in prepping the car. I think most of them figure the average owner will never notice. The chemical bath they can give the car does not harm the paint of any of the exposed surfaces.

Interdasting. Been googling "rail dust", as I have never heard of that before. After doing that, my guess is OP's car was re-painted.

The rail dust falls on the surface of the paint but as it rusts it becomes embedded in the paint. Most people don't realize how soft paint is. That's why even using a clay bar won't eliminate the problem. It takes the chemical wash to do it.

Mine was covered in "rail dust" when I drove it home.

The worst was where it made lines on the edges of the stickers that were on during transport.

About 2 hours of claybar removed 99% of it but it was not like removing regular dirt off the car.

Have you looked at this with something like a printer's loupe or high powered magnifying glass?
Need to find out it the surface of the clear is deformed or pitted where those spots are.
Would also be interesting to know what it is that is showing that light color. If it's actually the primer or deposition coat being exposed.

Hard to tell from the photos but it doesn't look like rail dust to me. It looks like slight soak/solvent pop. If it is, it won't get worse and doesn't mean durability is in jeopardy, just that when the factory clear was applied the basecoat may have not been dry enough. Its a very slight cosmetic condition that many factory paint jobs can have. I wouldn't worry about it.

Took it into the dealer, who had no idea, and had me come back in the next day to see the paint specialist from their body shop.

He said something has actually eaten through the clear coat. He thinks that maybe I got around someone spraying lacquer, or some sort of solvent, but he's never seen anything like it.

I have filed a claim with Xzilon (which I got when I got the car) but I'm not really holding my breath. Not really sure what to do now.

My hood had overspray from the factory, came off with a clay bar. Have you tried clay?

Please keep updated. I hate to see everyone trying to dodge accountability on a new car :(

Yes, I tried clay and it didn't make a difference.

When you look at the spots up close with a magnifying glass they are actually holes into the paint, not buildup/spots on the paint. :(

Those are probably what we paint guys call pinholes. Happen when flash/oven temps settings aren't just right in the factory. Can you tell if they go all the way to the basecoat? If they aren't too deep I have seen good detailers correct them with light sanding/buffing.

Worse case its red and easy to respray the base/clear with a good match, hopefully get Scion to pay for it. The repair paint chemistry at the dealers/ certified Toyota collision centers these days is 2K urethane and should actually better than the factory for long term durability. Just make sure they sand all the way past the bottom of the pinholes.

Mine had " Boat Acne ?" Some Service Manager said" from being shipped over some Car's got {Toxic/Acid Rain} on them :bs:!

What ever it was they spent 2 days Washing ,and detailing in with a ' Baking Soda Mixture'. To Neutralize the chemicals.

Then ,Clay bared, and Color Buffed the complete car !

No More weird Spots and it shines like a Stripper's A$$ "I'm in Vegas ":drool:!

I Took it in and the Service Manger said "It was from the AC Compressor switch on and off ":bs:

No need for my AC now and it still does it :thumbdown:
