TRD Intake & Exhaust Performance Numbers
For those of that are curious about the TRD intake and exhaust and wonder if they add any performance to your vehicle here is a motor trend article I just stumbled upon.
https://wot.motortrend.com/2013-scio...rs-367231.html Apparently (despite the naysayers/haters on this board) these parts do add performance to your FR-S even without a tune. According to the article they took their FR-S out after letting the new parts settle in for two weeks. The only upgrades were a TRD Intake and Exhaust. The gains they noticed were not earth shattering but were noticeable especially as the vehicle gained speed. 0 - 60 mph improved from 6.2 to 6.1 sec. 0 - 100 mph improved from 16.3 to 16.0 sec. 1/4 mile improved from 14.8 to 14.6 sec. So that leaves me wondering how much more could you get out of these two mods if you had them tuned? |
I can show those kind of improvements by testing my car, taking a shit and re-testing my car.
|
I think a better test would have been 5 runs of stock vs 5 runs of TRD then average it out. What is listed there could purely be driver.

well, it seems legit-ish.
When you take all the number into account you can see they didn't just have a mad start. More to do with the top end being better. Stock TRD Cold Air Intake and Catback 0-30 MPH 2.1 sec 2.1 sec 0-40 MPH 3.1 sec 3.1 sec 0-50 MPH 4.6 sec 4.5 sec 0-60 MPH 6.2 sec 6.1 sec 0-70 MPH 8.2 sec 8.0 sec 0-80 MPH 10.4 sec 10.1 sec 0-90 MPH 13.2 sec 13.0 sec 0-100 MPH 16.3 sec 16.0 sec Passing, 45-65 MPH 3.3 sec 3.2 sec QUARTER MILE 14.8 sec @ 95.1 mph 14.6 sec @ 95.7 mph LATERAL ACCELERATION 0.93 g (avg) 0.93 g (avg) FIGURE EIGHT 26.0 sec @ 0.70 g (avg) 25.8 sec @ 0.72 g (avg) |
The difference in trapspeed is pretty minor, less than 1 mph. On a basic horsepower to trapspeed calculator, the calculated gain is approx. 3-4 hp.

Nothing against those mods, but a good set of tires would net similar or better results.

Run 1: stock Run 2: airbox Run 3: airbox exhaust Run 4: exhaust Run 5: stock Run 6: exhaust Run 7: airbox exhaust Run 8: airbox Run 9: stock But that's alot of work. There will of course be reporting bias as well. If they got results with no gain or losses, they wouldn't report it at all anyway. The only car magazine that has close to a scientific testing method is CR which...has it's own flaws. |

B. They had no vested interest in the TRD mods and were not trying to influence readers into getting them. If you read the entire series on FR-S there was more than one editor that even said they preferred the car without the exhaust due to highway drone. C. There is no exact science to absolutely prove without a doubt that there are not external variable effecting test results when testing things like this. But of course your here to make smart@ss comments and prove that you know more and are better at doing this than the people at Motor Trend. |
While it is reasonable to assume that a less restrictive intake and exhaust, that don't have any secondary issues (i.e. MAF or 02 misreadings) would make a modest increase in power, and therefore decrease accelerations times, the differences shown on this test (1-2%) are no greater than the daily performance fluctuations we see on a modern car based on a number of variables that are not accounted for (atmospheric, driver margin of error, track grip). If you look at the data realistically, we cannot actually conclude that these items are making a realistic power upgrade. However it does seem fair to say that they are doing no harm.

I for one love the fact that people with resources to do this type of testing chose our car. This is just data that you can inform yourself with for free.

Bunch of negative Nancies.

B. They have a vested interest in providing some kind of service (entertainment) without pissing off manufacturers. A test saying they got no results provides no service to people in general (people believe what they want regardless, as evidenced by you) and poses the risk of making a manufacturer angry. C. There is an exact scientific method. Dynos can be utilized and structured/repeatable scientific tests while controlling for as many variables as possible. This test was sloppy science, simple as that. Sorry you don't agree. Go to a track and do a few passes. Tell me how much variation you have in your times and traps without changing a thing. I guarantee you you will have more variance between runs than was demonstrated by these "power" mods. I'm not hating the parts, just the article. It's flawed. Don't get your panties in a bunch. |
Everyone knows you need to see a 10% increase in gains for it to even be put to the whp an intake is basically drab. As far as an exhaust goes it does free up congestion and pressure but, not nearly enough for viable gains. Best bet save that two grand and if you'd like some gains spend the money on a damper kit ,wheels, tires, bb and a turbo or sc whatever your little heart desires. A shark fin antenna will make you aero tho haha
