FR-S Loud Engine Noise

Hey guys,

I went through the threads (i swear) and could not find this particular noise thread.

It happens every time when the engine is idling. Could someone tell me if it is normal? Seems a bit loud for a car with less than 1000 miles.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I can't view the link since I'm at work, but I am willing to bet it is the Subaru valvetrain noise that kicks in when the engine is at full temperature. If that is the case, perfectly normal. If it's the crickets.... you can't miss the thread:

First half the video sounds completely normal, second half sounds like you leaned on something that began to vibrate with the engine. If it's consistent (the second half the video) and you can't make sense of it take it in. If it sounds like the first half of the video 90% of the time your car sounds perfectly normal to me.

Thanks! I definitely spent a long
Time going over the crickets thread I have them but that's not it. Hmm the vehicle was already at operating temperature when it came on, shut the engine off for 30 secs then turned it on and it went away (this is when I took the video) so it like resets itself. Just sounds like a huge increase in the noise

It only kicks in after it idles for a bit ( the above comment on temperature sounds about right). I couldn't make sense of it so I posted it here :) if I can get some guidance I can know a little more before I take it in.

mine sounds like that. It's like an accessory fan turns on to cool the car and the idle dips a little bit so it's more clackety. It's even worse with the AC on. I think it's normal. These motors just sound like poo in general.

Haha well said. Imm keep an eye out for a fan clicking on next time. I like the normal noise, I can live with the crickets, but this sounds like the thing is about to fail..

I'm a fan of the theory that most of the noises are fairly "normal" noises for modern engine but we simply aren't accustomed to hearing them. Most cars are much more heavily soundproofed than the 86 (let alone the sound pipe).

It at least helps with my anxiety.

If it makes you guys feel better, my car has 22k miles on it, has averaged 30.3MPG according to the computer, since new, and it hasn't blown up yet.

FYI, that noise is normal. My car does that as well too. Nothing to worry about. That's the Subaru valvetrain I was talking about. This is nothing to worry about.
(At home now, watched your video)

That's the normal sound of the fuel system going into DI only mode at warm idle.

When you start the car, it runs on port injection only for a few seconds, then switches to DI when the idle is stable, after warming up the catalysts and engine coolant if needed.

Yeah I had that too since the beginning, I think its normal tho haha car is still running

Yesterday I was official cricket lol
I'm the weird one.. I actually love crickets! Even though I live in suburban area, I hardly hear crickets nowdays. Thanks to my BRZ, it provides me a great ride and also beautiful cricket noise. :)

Ahaha I rly don't minddddd but I just wanna jump in the bandwagon hehehe. Reminds me of when I went to Puerto Rico. As long as they don't go to woodpeckers and there is not issue i dont mind. Once they actually have a verified fix ill change the pump. I have access to alldata where I work so I'll keep checking.

Hey thanks everyone for all the replies!! Set my mind at ease now :) now just gotta install injen intake and hope I don't get the issue with with, got my nameless exhaust coming in a week or so :D
