Anyone changed their front pipe?

Has anyone here upgraded their front pipe? If so;
- did you go catless (test-pipe) or catted?
- which brand did you get?
- where did you get it from?
- how much was shipping?
- was this with stock exhaust or did you also upgrade other parts like header, overpipe, catback?

I'm about to pull the trigger on either a Motiv or Private Label catted front pipe, to be used with the rest of stock exhaust system. Catback system to come later. But the shipping from US to AUS is ridiculous....something like $160 - $180 depending on vendor!!!

I purchased a JDL over pipe and catted front pipe (want to keep it legal). Those 2 items cost me AUD$714 including freight from JDL themselves. That was when 1 AUD = 0.991941 USD. Shipping component was approximately $100. This went on to a standard header and custom 2 & 1/2 inch single exit cat-back (front pipe back).

Have you thought of the Perrin front/over pipe?

Carmods Aus has them.

Fizz 09-20-2013 11:51 AM

Yea I like the Perrin too, but very pricey especially if getting from carmods...$640 shipped to Perth just for the catted front pipe!!! As much as I hate paying thru the nose for shipping, I think its still cheaper buying fom overseas vendors.

With regards to overpipes, any known fitment/clearance issues on RHD cars?

My experience with multi piece exhausts are that you only need to replace every second unit... unless the dia is to change... New Headers will force the spent gasses past the original front pipe with ease and the Mid pipe will help with the vacuum until the standard Muffler!

some Back pressure is required for better Volumetric efficiency

I got an over pipe and high flow catted front pipe made by MX Performance installed by Garage 88 for $680 total.
Dunno how much it would cost to have it shipped across to Perth though.

Ultimate racing modified front pipe and over pipe in 2.75 " huge difference.!

I'm looking for a catted front pipe with a really good resonator. Not sure which one to get. Need to make an attempt to calm the Tomei Type 80 beast.

Fizz 11-03-2013 10:38 PM

I think if you changed the front pipe, even with a high flow cat, the sound is only going to increase regardless.

Perhaps try changing the resonator first and see how that goes. On my previous car that had an aftermarket catback which pissed all the neighbours every morning, I had good results by simply fitting a 5" round Magnaflow resonator.
