Possibly stooopid bluetooth question

Ok, so I had my old crappy android phone working with bluetooth audio no problem. Recently I bough an HTC One SV, awesome phone btw, and now when I bluetooth the audio from my phone to the headunit (the basic radio) everything works fine except the volume. I can't adjust the volume with the headunit anymore. I didn't have this problem with my old phone. Actually, I figured out if I quickly cycle the power to the radio (double tap the power button to turn it off/back on) I have control of the volume for about 3 seconds before it locks. Its a PITA to pull off the double tap power move every time I want to adjust the volume. I can use the volume on my phone, but I shouldn't have to. Has anyone else had this issue?

Lol. I have this issue on my s4 once in a while. Its annoying. I think it happens when I go into the deck menu or options. ill shut the car off then on to usually get it working again.
