Any interest in 4.5 final drive from Auto Factory?
I'm thinking of buying a few of these, one for myself and the rest for others to buy. For automatics, it should make the car feel much more responsive, with a gear ratio closer to the manual. If used in a manual, it will also enhance the acceleration - but you will loose MPG as the tradeoff.
I'm not a vendor, it's just a hard part to get in the US and thought others might want one. Should I move this to the "group buy" section? Do I have to be an oficcial vendor? Should I set up a ebay/amazon account? http://translate.google.com/translat...1&ie=Shift_JIS Sorry it's a little off topic. Mike |
Have you found a solid price after shipping/duty? If not then you might want to consider other options. You're probably looking at $600+ per set by the time you get them in-hand. Heavy items are rather expensive to ship from Japan. There are other gear sets available with far less hassle.
I've not seen the gears in person but Weir Performance has a 4.56 set for $240 available here for the MKIII Supra. The factory gears are certainly nice but I'm not sure they're worth 2.5x the price. I have an MFactory 4.67 in my 6MT and can't tell a difference in quality between them and factory gears once installed. I doubt the Weir are any different. @PantsDants is getting a 4.88 for his 6AT from Weir. After much debate he decided this ratio made more sense with a slushbox and put it in-line with a 6MT. Thread is here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45217 @JimmyMac started a discussion on final drives that you might find of interest. Thread is here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45152 @Crossover Auto has a group buy on MFactory 4.44 and 4.67 gears at $600 shipped. I've never dealt with them but the price is competitive for that particular gear set. Thread is here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43835 . |
Thanks 37. I was just going around trying to assemble the links. Thank you for saving me the time hahah

I also heard of people using Lexus 250/300 gears but they were talking about find it at junkyards. 4.88 is a bit much for me, since it would limit second gear top speed in autox. I'd like to keep some of the MPG. 4.55 ~ 2500 in 6th = 70mph, 7400 in 2nd = 59mph. 4.88 ~ 2700 in 6th = 71mpg, 7400 in 2nd = 55mph Thanks for all the info! Mike |
FWIW, I'm fairly certain (read: not absolutely sure) that any of the 8" Toyota ring and pinion sets (with the exception of the reverse ones in the Land Cruiser and some other trucks) will fit our diffs. Again, not for sure, but I'm basing this off the fact that the price I got from Weir was strangely similar to all of the other options for 8" kits I've seen online (Yukon, Precision Gear, etc.). I just went with Weir for the peace of mind that he markets the parts specifically for car differentials, not trucks. And also the fact that he flat out told me it works on IS differentials.

Really liking the idea of the 4.88 for the AT.

It makes sense for the auto but I think the manual is low enough.

Really hoping the Weir gears work out well. I wasn't even willing to consider this mod at the $1000+ pricepoint, but if I can get gears+install for ~$500? That's something I'd strongly consider. Car's presently a lease though, so they may not be too fond of that haha. |
Yeah, at $500 I'd do it in a heartbeat once my warranty is up (1 year done!).
