About the LED strip on the GT86

Is that for DRLs or does it work as high beams or what?
Cuz on the FRS And 86 the headlight is projector beam style, but the FRS has the high beams where the LED strip would be, but the 86 just has the LED strip.....and i never noticed where high beams would be....

Was wondering how a swap would work if that's the case (or rather, what to do with the LED strip) Its also looking like the NA spec DRL's might either be low intensity high beams or where the amber turns signals are (i actually never noticed where it would be).

The LED's are used as DRL.

The main HID's are used as low and high beams.

Correct, the LED's are DRL. However only the BRZ comes with HIDs. The FRS does not.

On the 86/FR-S: The halogens have the projector low beam and reflector high beam. Halogen high beam is run at half-wattage for DRL.

On the 86/BRZ: The HID's are bi-xenon projectors (low and high in a single projector). The LED's/Light Strip are for DRL.

:word:There is a "shield" that flips up to cut off the top portion of the light output for low beams. When you switch to high beams the shield drops out of the way. So only one bulb is used for both high and low beams, the other lights are just DRL. The frs has separate lights for high and low beam. For the frs and gt86, the headlights should be swappable, but you would also need to add the switch for the aiming motor. The BRZ also has the turn signal in the headlight housing so it may not be swappable.

That's what I was thinking too...it's best to get the Toyota 86 HID lights to replace the FR-S lights...

and hope that these guys make some stuff for the FR-S stock lights...

uhh i hope not. im not paying 1.5k for a pair of lights!!!

Kiwi 04-02-2012 11:42 PM

For that kind of price why not just buy OEM headlights?

And I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, but $300 for a pair of led license plate lights!?

Xdragonxb0i 04-02-2012 11:52 PM

i think we evidence that scion will be offering HID lights. so hopefully its the same one from the 86 or the BRZ headlights

Jeff Lange 04-03-2012 04:02 AM

Scion will not be offering HID headlights, at least not for the first model year.

Clearcorner maybe expensive, but they are top stuff. You really think factory HIDs are going to be less than $1500 a pair? First of all the BRZ HIDS will probably not fit and so you are going to have to buy some from the European based 86, because the JDM ones are for right hand drive cars, so expect to pay a grip for some HID lights, unless you go straight aftermarket.

Plus the reason why the clearcorners are so expensive is because they use way more LEDS in their lights. More than anybody.

Something I noticed is that for the Japanese model, those LED's don't seem to be DRL. But when you look at the European model, they are always on when the engine is on.

Here is an example:

I believe you can turn the DRL off or on.
