(Piss-poor theory that does not apply to all cars, but I like to think it anyway): In general, cool cars have the gas filler on the right, and either dual exhaust, or an outlet on the left.

on new ones, yes. they tout it as a safety item. if you run out of gas on the highway, when you're pouring fuel from a fuel can into your car, you can stand away from traffic.

I think another great benefit of right side is that you can open your door fully without worrying about it banging something. Especially important in coupes, which have long doors.

i trust myself not to open the door into the pillar more than i trust my passenger to not hit the pillar.

Some little know facts about the gas door:
1)just about every car has an arrow on the gas gauge pointing to te side of the car the filler is on, so look for that if you're in an unfamiliar car or just forget. The BRZ has it as you can see in this photo (little arrow next to the fuel pump)
2)the hoses on the pumps are long enough to reach both sides of the car, so there's no reason to spin your car around if you end up on the wrong side. Just pull the hose over.

1) exactly. very useful with rental cars.
2) and risk scratching the paint??? ;)
