Axle replacement

Anyone have time to write a quick DIY on axle replacement? My inner CV seems to have suffered the same fate as many others around here. I managed to pick up a whole axle assembly w/ 36 miles for 99 (vs 250 for an inner CV from the dealer). This will be my first axle change though, so any pointers, tips or instructions would be greatly appreciated.

I took a couple pics from under the car if that will help:

Can't this be repaired under warranty?

Im starting to actually physically feel the "tick/click" noise in the pedals under acceleration. Brought this up at my dealer and they have yet to even acknowledge the noise it emits.

Whats going to eventually happen if my passenger side axle if its not replaced? I've had the ticking for about 10k miles. Dont ever autocross or track mine.

mine has only been doing it maybe 2k miles, but i'd rather err on the side of caution. We'll see if i can get this new one on.

I'd give any tips if I knew any. Interested in the results.

@civicdrivr is headed over in a bit and we're going to tackle it. I should have some pics and a writeup assuming we don't get carried away and forget.

I have delrin subframe bushings and solid diff mounts so I hear and feel everything the diff does, I have always felt a click- I think its part of the diff locking and unlocking but please correct me if I'm mistaken.

This shouldn't be too hard of a job. Long but not too bad. Jack up the offending wheel, remove the tire, remove what ever brake parts are in the way, take off the axle nut, remove enough of the suspension to get the axle stub to come out of the inner wheel bearing race, (this is where I'm not sure) and finally just give a sharp pull and the axle will disengage fom the diff and come out. If it doesn't come out there might be a c clip that will require the diff cover to come off so you can get the axle out of the diff. Which would also mean new diff fluid.

Good luck John. I'm wondering how much of the rear suspension wii have to come apart. I look forward to reading your findings.

We just finished, it wasn't too bad once we had the right tools. Basically we had to remove the axle nut, disconnect the brake line, LCA and toe arm from the hub. from there you can have someone hold the hub up and out while you remove the axle from the hub.

Then you just have to pry the axle out of the diff like normal.

Depends on when you're hearing it, but it very well could be the inner CV. I haven't opened mine up yet, but i suspect it's going to look a lot like this one:

Damn, @xjohnx my car was having making those distinct clicks as well.. It was coming from the left rear quarter panel area yes?

I took mine to the dealer the other day to get all my issues fixed up but all they did was re-torque the bolts down; however, to my surprise the clicking has gone away.

yep. i tried retorquing mine to no avail, unfortunately. The replacement seems to have fixed it though.

Same situation on mine but the clicking started again a few days later. It's almost two weeks now and the axle's clicking more than when I first brought it in.

I'll have to keep a look-out (hear-out?) for the click then.. hopefully it doesn't come back.
