30,000 mile service

I visited my local Toyota dealership today for an unrelated reason and since I am at 28000 miles i asked the service tech about the 30k service.
I was "informed" that i am "required" to change my plugs every 30k miles... and that it will cost at least $500 just for the plugs (including labor to install) plus a few other odds and ends, all said and done the total i was quoted was around $750 for the full service.
I was also told that toyota can void my warranty if i change my own plugs (which i highly doubt unless they can PROVE that the plugs i put in caused the issue).
I am finding it hard to believe that the spark plugs in our cars only last 30k miles.... any thoughts?

I want to clarify something that I didn't notice until Marchy asked, the $500 includes labor to install. My apologies for that oversight!

The plugs are good for 90k miles plus. Notify Toyota of America but first try to get that in writing from that shady ass service writer.

I'm WA.. I'll change your plugs for $300.. Bargain basement pricing, act now, today only!!

I'll have to look at my service book again, but I'm pretty sure the plugs are supposed to be changed at 60k miles. I personally don't see any reason not to push them to 90 though (I'll probably wait until 90k personally). Unless they are copper, there should be no issues going to 90k miles. You're service rep is an idiot.

does toyota not include maintenance until 36,000 miles?

suaveflooder 09-05-2013 03:17 AM

Just went to look.

This is straight out of Toyota's maintenance guide. Tell your dealer to shove it!

I don't always take my car to the dealership, but when I do, it's for the entertainment.

When going over the service schedule with the finance guy he noticed the 60K service had the spark plugs replaced listed and it was a 2 hr job per the book.

As @suaveflooder mentioned, I'd just follow the maintenance guide that came with the car and you should be safe.

It's $500 for the plugs because it's plugs and a BJ.

...Right?
