Intake, Header, Exhaust questions
 

I recently installed the following items on my car.
-Intake (Injen)
-Header
-Exhaust (NVIDIA Tri Tip)
-Suspension (Tein)
-Wheels and Tires
-Pulley
I bought all these parts off the owner of a performance shop that is wanting to get a new Mercedes and trade back in his FRS. I purchased these because I got an amazing deal and the car sounds and looks amazing. I am currently testing the parts for a week and can take return what I do not like. I have a few questions and concerns to ask in regards to the new upgrades.

1. Does this affect my warranty? I was told that it shouldn't unless they prove otherwise.
2. Is this a good setup to put on my car? I don't want to turbo/supercharge the vehicle.
3. Its very loud. The owner of the parts told me that the header is the loudest and if I take that off it will help alot. Is that true? Also he said i would not lose any noticeable performance.
4. My car idle seems a little rough. Not sure if its due to the car not being tuned maybe. I heard that anything to do with the computer will void the warranty.

Please let me know your guys thoughts.

#4 Correct, a tune would most likely make everything feel "smoother". A tune will also most likely increase gains from your header... thus making it noticeably improve performance.

i dont know much but I can tell you that the header, of all the exhaust parts, will provide you with the greatest performance in terms of HP and TQ.. so dont remove it or you will sacrafice power... sure sure.. it contributes to sound but the other exhaust components can do the same.. for example.. do you have two cats? do you have a resonator? do you have a muffler? if not then consider adding them to help with the sound.

A tune will void your warranty. I would assume that changing the pulley will also void your warranty because you are touching the engine... having said that does installing an intake void your warranty because you touch it too?

I have these same questions bro because I am going to get some mods to my FRS. I called my dealer and they told me that as long as I dont touch the engine i am ok.. however, i read the warranty papers and it says that any work ANY WORK on the car not done by Toyota voids the warranty.

as far as this being a good setup for your car without a turbo? I think so.. header back, intake and a tune is the best you can get for performance without FI. this is what I have plans to do with my car. I just need to find the right header.. not sure which one that will be. Rev works looks awesome but I hear nameless is going to be sick...

your screwy idle is due to your lack of tune.. this is likely d/t your new header.. but also d/t your pulley. without a tune and an aftermarket pulley you may even find that its too easy to stall your car out..

these are just my thoughts and idea from being in your shoes and reading up on stuff. I am new and I have recently started reading everything I could find.

If I were you, I'd keep what you have and look for a way to quiet it. Example would be the Nameless downpipe with added resonator option. Otherwise if the car's way too loud for you, then keep the header, return the exaust, and get something quieter than Nvidia.

As for the tune, you really should have one when running an aftermarket header. If your worried about voiding the warranty, then get something like Unichip that doesn't flash the ECU, but instead modifies its outputs. A tune will smooth the engine while unleashing the real power gains your mods are capable of.

Thank you for all the replies. I am taking my car in this weekend to discuss further with the shop. I think I have decided to keep the parts and figure out ways around the sound like you guys said. My debate now is do I just tune the car and gamble on nothing happening down the road. The other thing is my warranty is only 36k or 3 years and I was not planning on extending it.

Would any of the more experienced guys consider this dangerous? I know these aren't insane mods by any means, but I just figured intake/headers/exhaust on stock tune wouldn't be overly "healthy" on the engine. ie. running rich, lean etc.

While a tune is risky because of the fact you're messing with the ecu a good one would prevent the other parts from causing problems....

Lean or rich conditions are always a possibility when changing out parts specifically an intake. I wouldn't pay for the injen as it's not designed well on this platform.


Tldr: remove intake buy "good tune" look for quieter cat back or catted dp with resonator
