SPCorBUST's Built Motor Boosted BRZ | STI | Cusco | JR | E85
Function > Form
Well I've been following the BRZ since the concept. It was a long wait but I finally pulled the trigger back in May 2013, and picked up my 2013 Satin White Pearl Manual Limited BRZ in June from Clint at Heuberger Subaru. I started my "build" in June of 2013. I'm going for an "ego" street and track build using Cusco, STi, and Perrin as the main brands in my build, going for a classy, but low key exterior, and nearly every piece from the nuts, bolts, and bushings, to the brakes, coilovers, and interior upgraded. I want the car to feel communicative and balanced, but razor-sharp and frenetic when I want and need it to be. I don't expect the engine bay to win any awards, as its not my primary focus and I don't want it to look too crazy/clean under there on purpose. I want it to look stock-ish (save for a few flourishes) for when I get my hood popped again, so I'm going (a little) out of my way to make it appear as such by being careful about what draws attention under the hood. On to the good stuff! I drove the SRT-4 before the BRZ which was a FWD beast, having full bolt ons, a big wheel stocker, e85 and a fuel system to support it, a built suspension and just clean all-around. It still sits in the garage and is driven as my second car. Her name is Sloan, and here's a pic:

nice! do you ever head out to the irvine meet?
|
that's the best way to go on a srt4 stock turbo with a big turbine. bigger turbos usually break the car

Nice car man! Any pics of the Valenti's by any chance? I wanna see the 3rd brake light.

Stumbled upon this. Mind sharing dyno sheets and your overall feel of the SC? Reliability?
Latest pics of the car? Thanks! |

Kraftwerks C38 kit is out, and Jackson Racing C30 kit is in.
|
I'm interested to see how it goes for you. I was seriously considering your c38, though carb is a concern. So i'm definitely looking forward to a comparison opinion.
|
I'll be doing one, haven't decided whether or not to post it here or in the FI section for other owners though...
|
Fresh oil change yesterday, full tank of E85, Perrin crank pulleys and resonated catback exhaust installed yesterday has the car driving quite nicely.
|
Finally installed the STi radiator cap, STi oil cap, and STi battery tie down, as well as the Perrin radiator hoses and, after 2 years this month of having the car, some new Subaru Super Coolant.
I also took care of some front bracing to complement the Cusco front and rear sway bars and strut bars. I installed Cusco Power Brace Engine, Power Brace Front, and Front Lower Arm braces: http://i.imgur.com/rHchqRb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/iOCjaLt.jpg http://i.imgur.com/hWm0MPE.jpg The front I think is done. I'm going to have a shop tackle the Perrin PSRS. Not sure when I'll have time to install the driveshaft and I really need to get the Jackson Racing Oil Cooler and a different custom tune. My current tuner apparently stopped replying to any of my e-mails, have no idea why but have no time for bs, lol. Off to a local dyno tune I go, pending some free time of course. |
|
The rear bracing I'll take care of this weekend ahead of an install of the Cusco LCA's, end links, and trailing arms, which I have yet to purchase.

My initial impressions of the front braces, considering I have coilovers and the Cusco front strut tower bar, front sway bar, front lower arms, engine braces, and front powerbrace altogether now is that during hard brakes my front tires have started chirping and the brakes shudder once or twice now, thats with the master cylinder brace, Motul fluid, Stoptech lines, and Stoptech pads on stock rotors. (mentioned fluid and lines although I know those aren't directly related, just for completeness) Maybe its because of all of the increased force going there? Not sure, but the car does feel different when I'm yanking the wheel left or right or carrying a bit of speed in onramps as well. Not sure how that'll play out on the track yet, but I'm not ready for that right now anyway... I imagine that once I get the rest of the rear pieces in there it may be even more pronounced.
Shoutout to @CSG David for coming through on these parts for me. I'm going to swap out my Buddy Club Racing Specs for Cusco Street Zero A's but not sure which type yet, perhaps that will help some. Still going for comfort and not looking to break the bank on my few trips to the track each year. @CSG Mike any advice? |

Just drive it more and determine if you like it or not :)

Installs Tonight
Cusco Power Brace Rear Side Cusco Rear Crossmember Brace Cusco Rear Differential Brace Irvine, CA has very smooth roads, I'm thinking that daily driving with the Cusco Rear Differential Brace shouldn't be too bad, but I'll mix it up with some freeway driving from time to time. Work is only ~15 miles roundtrip, but E85 is ~30 miles roundtrip. Rick from RallySportDirect mentioned that he wouldn't use it daily unless you like the raw feeling, but with the road condition here it may be a non-issue for me. |
Side Notes
The Perrin cone filter may be too long and the writing will be upside down to boot. I'll probably rotate the writing underneath and out of sight. The brake cozy was sold out, so should be here in a few days. Bought them together to match underhood. Wondering if the Perrin branded T-bolt clamps will accommodate the JR pipes and couplers. Trying to find pics for the OLM S-line Carbon Fiber Headlight Eyes I found on FT86speedfactory. Wondering if the STi battery tie down will fit with the FT86speedfactory lightweight battery kit. Looking to research the FT86Speedfactory fuel rails some more. The ZSpec fasteners around the throttle body have gotten significantly lighter in color from the lighter shade of the Cusco-ish blue that they once were. The rest of the fasteners seem to be fine. |
Who ended up finishing your flex fuel tune? Everything running peachy?
|
@dj2020 Noone yet, just haven't had the time. I'm debating between Delicious and Church, possibly both.
I've had good experience with Bill at Delicious, and although I hear "hero tune" thrown around with their tunes, my driveability was fantastic. The tunes were leagues better than the tunes I got when NA on FlexFuel with another tuner, and certainly much better than the ones I'm getting now. The current tunes were done remotely, so no direct access to the vehicle, which would certainly have helped there, but doesn't account for being hard to get in touch with. I'm also a little remiss about the injector purchase that was pushed on me - I already had smaller injectors for a kit that would make even more boost, and those injectors were only at 70%. :bonk: What I might do is get the "hero tune" at Delicious, and run over for another tune at Church. It would be good to see how my current kit performs against my previous kit, but also to see what the hp difference is between dynos while getting a more track-focused tune. I'm just curious like that. :iono: postbreak did something similar, just to get a sense of the different tuning styles. As I recall, in the end he liked all of them. |
I was thinking of doing the same thing and going with DT for my flex fuel kit, injectors, MAP sensor, and FnG tune. Later on, maybe a custom tune with Church when I'm ready to get a catless header. I would definitely like to hear about the drivability between the two tunes if you end up trying both. Thanks!
|
Quote:
I'm probably going to wind up switching my FF kit for DT's as well - I like the installation better, even if there's really no measureable difference. I'm just planning ahead for when I get reffed again. (I know its going to happen eventually... Again) |
Quote:
If you work with Church, stick with Church. If you work with DT, then stick with DT. Since they are both local in the Socal region, they will do what they can to help, but also switching tuners so often makes it difficult to have them keep track of what they have done to your car. In that sense, pick one and stick to them. |
So I've done roughly 60 miles of driving since yesterday. ~50 of those across three different freeways, and the remaining amount on the relatively smooth street.
The car feels absolutely planted, even with the 30k mile stock tires. I'm thinking about the rear subframe bushings from Whiteline as a new addition as well. |
Sooo in the pursuit of sublime shifting, I overlooked that the Perrin Rear Shifter Bushing replaces the rear bracket assembly - the same assembly that the TRD Quick Shift replaces. I also overlooked, that the STI short shifter replaces the boot, the same one the TRD Quick Shift replaces.
That means the only unique hardware in the TRD kit is the adapter and bolt. Of the two, I think the TRD may have more NVH, and although I won't know until they're all on and I try both options, I'm opting to try the Perrin bushing first. Hopefully, with the Motul tranny fluid, STI shifter, TRD quick shift kit, Cusco shift lever retaining bushings, MTEC springs, Perrin lockout, and STI knob I'll have that sublime feeling when rowing. I think the feel in the shifting aspect may be "finished" after that. I think the suspension is an ongoing thing, but I want to turn some attention to lighter weight in the drivetrain and other areas next. I'm thinking Motul fluid, STI clutch, Exedy lightweight flywheel, MTEC clutch spring, Perrin pulleys, DSS aluminum driveshaft, AP Racing Sprint kit, and lighter wheels will net me the edgy response and feel I want out of the pedals. I'm still loving the changes the braces made to the car. Now, I'm off to install the last Cusco rear end brace, the Perrin overpipe, frontpipe, and rear shifter bushing, and the DSS driveshaft. |
Well, mother #$%*(@!
Today, this happened: http://i.imgur.com/KOaGRYN.jpg Yep, the last $*#@%^! bottom bolt on the stock overpipe was seized, and cracked off inside of the header. Here's the culprit: http://i.imgur.com/YDMpShI.jpg I'm taking it to the machine shop and letting them fix it. I tried drilling into the bolt with several drill bits meant for metal to no avail. I mean, nothing... Not even from the drill bits mean for drilling into seized bolts, swapping bits and drilling into it again before reversing out. So instead of wasting my time on that, which was fruitless, could continue to be fruitless, and which I might make worse, I just decided to grab this: http://i.imgur.com/2VB0kuo.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/iYWUwXE.jpg I've been following this header since it was announced here on the forums. It seems to be Tomei in every regard, with the exception of the Tomei stamp on the flange. I'd rather rock a Tomei, but couldn't get my hands on a new or used one in time for tomorrow, and couldn't justify that extra money for only the name on the flange. I don't think the difference here is the same as a Grid to a TE37, for example. Tomorrow once I finish my install of the driveshaft, shifter bushing, overpipe, front pipe, and headers, I'll add a sound clip to Youtube. |
Awesome build thread!
May I ask why your going to be selling your Whiteline Transmission Mount Bushing Insert? I ask because i have one coming in the mail right now >:O |
I look forward to the review and YouTube clip.

Installed system. Great sound. Just a little worried about where I live...
From the online videos I've seen I was concerned about it sounding tinny, but perhaps the rest of my setup helped out, because it sounds more like a JDL setup in that it's very deep/very bassy. It's at almost nothing at idle, but loud and angry at wot. It also seems a little less responsive off the throttle at low rpms, but maybe that's because of less back pressure, maybe because it hasn't been tuned yet, maybe because the top end seems to come on stronger now because of no cat and lighter drive shaft etc., or maybe it's all of it together. Not sure. I like it so far, but I prefer the stock headers right now for other reasons. I just bought them as an interim thing between getting my header fixed, with the possibility of keeping it. I'm grimy and have some stuff to attend to, so I may not get a chance to do videos until tomorrow. Apologies! |

Had the car on a lift last week while I installed the DSS drive shaft and other things. No vibrations, it went on perfect the first time around. One thing to note, I read in a thread here on the forums that there was a hiss of gas or something when they removed their driveshaft - I encountered the same. Didn't seem to affect anything, but I'll be putting it up on the lift in another week, so I'll know more by then. Here's a pic of it installed:
http://i.imgur.com/lbxKRq1.jpg Earlier I mentioned that I wasn't sure if the Perrin filter would fit - well, it does. And luckily enough, the Perrin is printed on both sides to be read the right way, so the logo still shows up properly. One note though, it does seem to touch the metal coolant line or whatever it is over there on the right. I installed the brake cozy as well. Pic: http://i.imgur.com/u4NPEWl.jpg?1 Some other parts came in in the meantime, but I'm holding off on installing them until the STI steering rack hardware, shifter, and knob come in, as well as the MTEC clutch and shifter springs. I'd prefer to do those on the lift - its amazing how much easier things are with the car in the air! http://i.imgur.com/qQ4kBAZ.jpg |
Look at all them goodies!
|
I just installed the Perrin Lockdowns your going to love them.
|
@olsonpg do you happen to remember if there was much room between the bolt and the lockdown holes? I'm wondering if the larger STI bolt will actually fit in there. If not, I might go with Cusco/STI/TIC steering rack bushings. They supposedly do the same thing, just from the inside vs. the outside. Maybe I can just use them in combination.
