Which oil filter for the FA20?

Does anybody know which oil filter they will be using for the FA20? I want to get some Mobil 1 oil filters so if we know which Subaru oil filter they use we can find the comparable Mobil 1 filter. Thanks.

Looks like the larger ~80mm filter, M104 in Mobil1 parlance.

Are they on sale for 50% off or something? Why not just wait and know for sure?

Thanks old greg. Haha, no they are not 50% off but I need to get oil for my BMW and I usually get the Mobil 1 5qts + oil filter deal. The BMW uses paper filter so I usually get the oil filter for other cars.

I wish it would be the M104. I still got a bunch of them for the S2000 that I've sold.

I've been waiting for this info as well. I'd like to know so I can talk to CM filters about a paper filter setup that will work with the recessed filter location. If anyone has a firm answer please post up.

After squinting at some engine bay pics, the P/N appears to be 15208AA130 which is the filter that comes from the factory on the FB motors.

That would be awesome if it's the M104 size. I have plenty for the Integras sitting around (that and the K&N version, since both are made by the same company). That'll be a lot easier to stock filters when advance does their sales.

I would expect the oil filter to have a check valve installed [like the VW TSI 2.0T] so it doesn't spill any oil as you unscrew it. Not having something like that would be asinine with regards to the inverted positioning.

Definitely would be nice to have some sort of valve, but not end of world if it doesn't....just got to slow your unscrew at the end.

There is a lip around the base of the filter. It essentially sits in a cup.

I guess time will tell if they made oil changes clean and tidy or an under-engineered mess [i.e. Miata].

Checking the Mobil web site the Impreza uses the M108 so I guess thats what the FA will use :-( Hope they let me change the M104 to M108. I got like a case of them.

It's definitely not going to be the M108, the new style filters are much larger than the old ones, which themselves are much larger than the M108.

Shitty old-school Honeywell (Fram) blue OEM EJ filter next to a shiny, well made Tokyo Roki OEM FB/FA oil filter (PN: 15208AA130) in Black .

And while I was digging around, I found this. It's an FB25 with a K&N HP1004 (equivalent to an M104).

That said, you're probably better off sticking to the OEM filter once you use up your stash of M1's. Tokyo Roki makes high quality filters and Subaru specifies a stupidly high bypass valve pressure, meaning that aftermarket filters will be allowing a lot more oil to bypass the filter element than Subaru recommends. The Tokyo Roki OEM filters are valved to Subaru specs, are very solidly built and they're only ~$6.50.

Toyo roki filters are awesome. I'll probably use it on my Hondas too since Honda switched to junk fram filters as well. I, or someone else should cut one of these open to see how it compares to the old good toyo roki Honda filters :)

Old Greg, you are absolutely right. I've done some research and the new FB25 engine uses the Tokyo Roki OEM oil filter (PN: 15208AA130). This is the filter used in the 2011 Forester 2.5X models equipped with the FB25 non-turbo engine. The turbo still uses the small blue crap filter. Our FA engine will also be using this new Tokyo Roki oil filter (PN: 15208AA130) and the equivalent Mobil1 oil filter is M104. Now that you mentioned that Tokyo Roki oil filters are better than the Mobil1 filters I might have to take your advice.
