Difficult to shift into first when coming to a stop

I find if i am coming to a stop doing about 5 mph or less, clutch in, if i shift into first, the transmission fights me and makes a clanking sound. I dont know why this happens with the clutch in and going that slow it gives me a hard time to shift into first. I feel that i am damaging the transmission. Im not talking about rev matching into first, the clutch is fully in while i try to shift from neutral to first or second to first. If i wait a second after completely stopped it goes in as normal. I had an 03 mini cooper s and never experienced this. It is a lease so should i bring it in to have it looked at or is this normal and i am not aware. Thanks.

mine does the same thing lots of clutch and trans noises..as for not going into first same thing, i come to a complete stop before putting it into first as i've read the gear ratios are really short in these cars

Same here. I mean, it'll let me throw it in <10 MPH, but anything above that, it'll fight. I think I'll avoid that monster and not worry *too* much about it and not do that. I really only use first to start from a dead stop anyways.

even my auto jerks around 5mph...

Blip the gas pedal before disengaging the clutch.

This car does not like going into first if you are above 12MPH or so. I noticed once I am down a bit more on speed it will slide right into first.

Hi ZackZ ......http://www.runemasterstudios.com/gra...mages/wave.gif

I've found that some cars will let you into first gear at some speed .... others don't like to do that.

I had a 2006 Miata, 5 speed, that I could put into first at 40 mph, however, you only get to let out the clutch once per engine doing that.

My FR-S (MT) likes to be dead stopped before it goes into first. Besides, if you are rolling at all, usually second gear will pull it up.

Hahaha!

Yeah, my Tiburon won't go into first at over 5mph without rev matching, but rev matching smoothly into first is hard to do. It's never bothered me though, because if the car is rolling at all, second gear is plenty.

Another note to be made if you're a manual is consider some motul 300, Redline mTL, or Pentosin fluid swap world of difference to say least.

Try to put it in first without the clutch. That usually works for me.

Disclaimer: Don't you fucking dare try this. If you do, it's not my fault your dumbass can't sense sarcasm.

What are "Motul 300", "Redline mTL", and "Pentosin fluid swap"?

Different transmission fluids, supposed to work better than the factory fill.

granny shifting... not double clutching like you should.

This. I've found that when driving in manual mode in the auto you just can't beat the car to first. It downshifts about 5 or so mph. If you try to it any sooner it'll jerk so you just have to let it have that one.
