Hood Vents and Weather

I was curious to know what drawbacks one should be aware of when considering a vented hood like so:

I assume water and anything else that can fit through the mesh will just end up on your engine right?

Also, while we're on the topic of carbon, what are Seibon's competitors? I'd like to get a sense of alternatives.

I believe he wants to know if there'll be any harm from having an "open" hood during weather events. If snow/rain etc will hurt engine components since it'll be able to come in through the vents.

I'm more of the concern for the entire engine bay being full of snow. Gotta love Wisconsin. Will have to check out the rainguard inserts previously mentioned. My stock hood is getting annihilated by stone chips. Hoping carbon'll fair better.

I live in florida and have this exact hood from sibon. It is a great hood and it rains almost everyday! I have twin turbos and it has not caused one problem. U just have to clean the engine more. Thats all! As for snow.........I wouldnt know. We dont have that here:)

Do you have any measurements you can share regarding temperature decrease from the venting? Obviously heat is a problem for you with any kind of FI setup.

I have had the same hood on my scion tC that sat out everyday for 2/3 years with 0 issues.

I also have this same hood on my FR-S for almost 6 to 8 months now and 0 issues as well. I have washed it at least once a week and it seens rain etc on a weekly/biweekly basis

what about HIDs? have you noticed any issues when approaching rain ? does the engine look soaked after it rains/?

kanundrum 10-20-2013 12:07 AM

No issues what so ever. I am running HID's Most new cars have water proof seals for everything.
