Couldn't wait... here's the surprise!
Hello all :D
I hope it's OK if I made a new thread about this! This was a 'paint' in the ass  Two weeks ago, I got a great deal on an untouched Five Axis rear spoiler. It was from the first person I met and talked to who also owned an FR-S, same color as mine. He had his for a year, was dropped/wheels/kit. Much cooler than mine, to say the least :P Regardless, I mention this because, in that one year, he seemed to have developed quite a passion for the car, at least aesthetically. I told him how I wanted to paint the spoiler black (in addition to the roof) to contrast with the tails. "Nooooo!", was his reply. He was very adamant on not ruining the lines of the car. He also happened to work at an auto body shop like me. So ...I respected his opinion and was open to his ideas. With the spoiler mocked up, he tossed up his idea, and after a minute of visualizing... I was sold. So, today, I was at the shop at 8:00am. Drove home at 3:30pm. I have not painted in years, so a guy from our shop painted the car. (Thanks, Al!) Here are the results, : Initial mask-off to prevent damage to surrounding panels. All mouldings/antenna removed. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psba2965a4.jpg Prepped, washed... ready for booth. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3c1968d1.jpg In the booth, time to dry off the car as much as possible. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psddb13ab1.jpg Covered up! http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0fbb5f6b.jpg Please cut on dotted lines: http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psa58b2f2a.jpg Wax & Grease remover on all painted surfaces. Tack cloth to dry. So... do you have a clue yet :iono:?http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps403fd64d.jpg The top is going to be black. Here is a better look a the line. It is DEAD center of the curve. Very tough line to follow. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps63b09f21.jpg Test fitting the spoiler.... http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psb426ea63.jpg ...and it's no good :( Does not flow with spoiler. So... http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...pse2b021ae.jpg The top black panel was widened ever so slightly, to expand a bit over the curve: http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psbdd0abd2.jpg This time around, it follows the lines of the spoiler much better :) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8bbe3a41.jpg Acceptable. Very acceptable. (You can't see what I could. Sorry for crappy cell pics!) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps01d50904.jpg It's a done deal... http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps37b1c8ec.jpg Here's the spoiler. Only the forward most partition is going to be black. Ass-end to be Firestorm Red :): http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6af5d322.jpg Time to mask off anything we don't want black: http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps41973543.jpg Don't forget the spoiler! (We shot the black first on it): http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps80b8b53b.jpg Time to mix some paint.... http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps914d2f7d.jpg DAMNIT! I WENT OVER BY .1 GRAMS! ....I forgot to "correct & recalculate" :bonk: It'll be alright though :) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1df66138.jpg First coat of black (spoiler not shown): http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5a650e62.jpg Black dried... taped off spoiler on opposite side, and painted it red: http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psc186d6f6.jpg Time to clear :) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psd7eae725.jpg FR-S CLEARED! http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psed209b6c.jpg Spoiler gets cleared as well: http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps888fa515.jpg The only dust nib in the whole job... Got a few fisheyes, but luckily, we were able to kill those :) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psfb5e1909.jpg Now before you bake the car... Remember it's still wet from the washing! Undo as much plastic sheeting as possible (because evaporating moisture will cause it to cling and literally embed into the clear. Pain to take out!" http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...pscf0f19f9.jpg And that's it for now :) I will tell you... the black looks like a GLASS. I am very happy with the results. After I buff the car and put it together, I'll post some finished pictures. I left the spoiler at work on purpose :P gotta let this sit for a bit. Oh, and... before we painted anything, NOTICED MY FIRST DENT! http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps27fcee46.jpg Hopefully, dent wizard can take it out... stay tuned later this week :) Thanks for reading! MUCH LOVE TO THE FR-S, the star of the show :) |
Looks good:thumbsup: nice how you sucked us in, i guess you didn't want to spoil it for us yet
Can't wait to see it with the spoiler mounted and all the tape and platstic removed. From what I can see so far looks really good!
why not vinyl?
MORE PICTURES OF WHEN THE SPOILER IS ON!
actually looks better than I thought it would be |

Ultimately, it's sheen is no where near what's possible with paint. I like shiny things :) I put everything together. Did not buff anything, did not clean off any fingerprints, did not take off overspray.... so please pay no mind to that! Here's some night shots, sans spoiler: Dat ass. I think it looks damn good even without the spoiler. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...pseacea656.jpg The light just melts over the trunk. (In this pic, you can see the rough edges on the trunk though, hehe) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps49d31756.jpg A bit further back. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9d064ad2.jpg Not the best pic, but just trying to show the luster. (I was standing almost 40ft away.... big lens :X, could't find stock lens for camera) http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...pscb87f18e.jpg Spoiler pics in a few days :) Gonna get the car detailed finally, pretty much done with the body for now.... now I can move onto other things  EDIT: I still have dealer plates, yes... little issue with registration, that, THANK GOD, was finally resolved today. Custom plates soon :) |
Reminds me of my old red tC. :) Love that look!
Let the rice begin.
Good show bro! I'm a big fan of two tone paint jobs. Bonus points if you figure out some way to extend the darker color onto the hood somehow.

I have to get winter tires and wheels and/or a beater first :( |
paint the rear bumper, aka the black plastic bit around the exhaust. imo its dull color clashes with your overall sheen
Looks good! Dont like the front though
2 tone looks good, striped are lame
Looks awesome buddy..!! :D
Now get yourself a black shark fin antenna. |
It looks good man, can't wait to see how it turns out with the spoiler.
I'm not sure if I'm enjoying it yet, but it's different, so go you! :)
This conjures weird feelings like the pepto bismol FRS or the dairy cow BRZ that I saw, not sure what I think of it be honest. However, I do have to give you props for being unique! :) So in that sense, cool ride (?)
Not bad man..cant wait to see it with the spoiler on
Here's a quick mockup... decided to reclear the spoiler again so you don't see/feel the black/red divider.
I'll probably be completely done Tuesday or Wednesday. http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...psac6ebac7.jpg http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...pscbb64ea9.jpg http://i1364.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0b159ded.jpg aite, back to work, peace! |
well... its different :]
This looks really good, especially the fact it is properly done with paint.
I understand some people don't like it but they should definitely appreciate the time, $, and hard work this took to be done properly and not some half ass vinyl/plastidip/rattle can job. Even if you don't like the way it looks, if anyone says this is a bad job they are obviously on something I'd like to have a sample of. |
Glad your being different looks like good work. I just cant get with the 2 tone paint job it kills the entire look of the car in my opinion. :iono:

IDK, its def. different but these cars just have too much curves unlike most old cars that are boxy. 2 tone only looks proper on certain cars and this just isnt one of them. just my opinion...
^^^^
turned out really nice!! |
I hated it on the first page, but with the spoiler, it actually looks pretty good! I think it would look better with red or OEM tails, though.
I like it!
I liked the tinted head and tailights. I might do the same for mine.
One small bit of friendly advice... Next photo shoot bring some tire wet to black out the plastic in your wheel wells. It will further enhance the "clean car" look and your pics!
@hamzam love your creativity! but are those taillights putting out enough light? they give me worry!
The car seems to me like Two-Face. The racing stripe on the hood (to me) doesn't seem to work with the blacked out roof and two-tone trunk. Seems like a little cognitive dissonance. If either were done to the full length of the car then maybe my OCD about symmetry (or a balance of negative space) wouldn't bug me so much.
However, I think the paint job itself looks fan-friggin-tastic! At at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what a bunch of keyboard commandoes whom you will probably never meet think of your car. If you look at it and it makes you smile then that is all that matters in the world. And, I have to agree with the concern about the amount of light getting through the tail lights. I have been rear-ended 12 times in the last 15 years here in Floriduh. If I could put a 15KW work boat spotlight on the back end so these dumb-arses would see me then I would. |
I'm not much of a fan of the red, but that has turned out very clean.
I like the painted black roof, that would make me smile every morning I see her in the driveway

Being honest, I am not feeling the two-tone style paint. That said, you did an amazing job, it looks first rate, and I admire your attention to detail.
As long as you like it, that is what matters. |
That shine is amazing i'll give you that
