Thought id make this thread just to discuss random turbo gibberish and what shines about each company


Garret seems to be always a top pick when choosing a turbo ( a basic Gt/gtx) but i always wondered whats is so special about EFR turbos. Most cars ive witness being built around me always used a GT series turbo or the classic HKS T51r ( Yumy :wub:) after moving to another part of the world i started seeing how precision turbos and EFR are great but id love to know whats so good about them.

my questions might seem un clear, but i know that precision used to just resale and re work on garrett turbos until they got cut off and just recently started perfecting their own turbos especially with the famous 6xxx series

while on the other hand Garrett (honeywell) and Brogwarner are big boys that supply the oem market

id like to hear your opinions

im a Gtx fan boy my self but always wondered about EFR turbos :bonk:

Garrett offers proven power and performance which is why they sell for a premium cost. PTE has been running very strong over the last 6 years and offer turbos for just about any power range at an affordable cost; however, they have yet to show longevity equal to garrett's units. Borg warner makes awesome units and the EFR series speaks for itself offering good power at a medium price point. In my opinion where BW really shines is the Airwerks series. They are the king of large frame turbos and make killer power even on small displacement full race applications.

I like the efr for its packaging. When you price out something in a similar flow rate and then price up a bov and wastegate sometimes the EFR is cheaper. But the EFR takes up a lot more space at the same time. Also there transient response is very good, one of those things you have to drive it to fully get the picture. I feel the garret gt series are great turbos, and some of the precision units as well. Precision has been plagued with center section issues for a while now, some never have issues while others go through them quite regularly. Install issues? Possibly. Garrett is finally bringing new life back into there gt series with the gtx, as well there have been modified gt series turbos that have produced great results. When it comes to picking a turbo it all comes down to what you have space available for, total flow needed, product availability, and cost. All three manufactures have great offerings on the table in one way or another.

I would hesitate to put precision in the hat with Garrett and BW,

I prefer Garrett because TiAl makes great housings that really lighten them up and increase the options for suiting a turbo perfectly to your desires while increasing your options for space and mounting, the efr stuff is cool, on paper, real world testing seems to create a lot of failures and there are inconsistencies in their castings vs what was laid out in the prototyping stage, showing they don't have a mature product yet for the efr series.
