Redneck steering wheel emblem swap
Just experimented a little and found a route that some of you may also want to go for the steering wheel emblem. I found this emblem here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271255438906...84.m1497.l2649
Manufacturer part number: 305313710 I got lucky and my emblem was perfect. They are used and some may be scratched. In that case, I would just plasti-dip.. polish it or something. The emblem has tabs on the back that need to be pulled off and then sanded down. Before beginning, find and remove the two 7.5amp horn fuses so you don't scare yourself while you're working. There is a diagram on the bottom of the fusebox cover. Step 1: Carefully pry off the Scion emblem. Step 2: Use a pair of wire snips and maybe a razor blade to remove the raised Scion emblem mold in the middle of the steering wheel. If you don't remove it, the new emblem will not go flush against the steering wheel. http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb39153c4.jpg Step 3: Use rough sandpaper (120-220 grit) and try to get the plastic center of the steering wheel as flat as possible... Some have got the middle of the steering wheel to a mirror shine using 2000 grit if I remember correctly. I just gave up on getting it perfect and went this route: http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/a...psb4672707.jpg I cut out an oval from a box of laminated red Mother's car wax and glued it behind the emblem using hot glue. Step 4: I secured my emblem into place using hot glue, which is great because it's easily reversible if you mess up or decide you don't like it. Step 5: Enjoy your custom emblem install http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/a...ps82a73882.jpg |
Nice! I might try this out when I swap the outside emblems!
I think a matte black emblem on the airbag would look better. |
Ordered mine up.. Thanks.. I've been putting off rebadging for some time now
|
Ordered my emblem, looks like a fairly painless method. Thanks!
|
Interesting... This is the one eyesore that I've been wanting to fix. I noticed you're in Texas, how's the glue holding the emblem to the wheel holding up to the heat?

I gave it a little pry on the edge and it seems to still be lodged in there pretty good. It hasn't had to sit in a parking lot yet, just the garage, but I'll let you know. |
Been putting off doing this, but after pulling the airbag to swap colors on my interior trim, this looks super easy.
With the link, it looks even easier! Thanks, just ordered! |
this is easier. did you remove the airbags or just the fuse of the horn?

I had shipped off some parts to JPM Coachwerks to get redone in Alcantara, and I had some leftover swatches that they had sent me. They were ~2"x3" pieces of leather and alcantara, and I used black leather to back the emblem. The grain is almost an exact match for the wheel. Turned out great, until I mounted the emblem back about 3* crooked, and it bugs the shit out of me now....:mad0260: Anyhow, I WAS going to opt for red, but IMO it really made it stand out a bit too much. It may be your cup of tea, though, so I would suggest trying to hit up local fabric or craft stores and seeing what you can get. I may end up dipping my emblem black and using red leather to re-do my setup so I'm not staring at my wheel all angry while in traffic :bonk:But if not, I can send you the red leather swatch I've got left. |

Nice. Got mine ordered thanks to ElyTires and thanks to BuBlake for the find. I will also try matte black but on black leather imported from the Kobe region of Japan.

ANNND I didn't take a lot of time making my new badge. Need to get a new badge and take my time. I ripped the front badge off a paseo and literally just double sided taped it on. and you wouldn't be able to tell unless you go right up to it and look that its stuck on :)

just out of curiosity if the airbag were to deploy with this diy badge, would you have a toyota emblem stamped on your face or is the way the airbag is designed to break apart more clever than that ?

Like This: http://www.cruzetalk.com/forum/attac...eas-airbag.jpg The Scion badge is adhered on there with strong adhesive and what look to be plastic pins, to keep it attached when the airbag deploys. and let me also say that it has been TESTED by the manufacturer. If your glued toyota badge doesn't stick properly to the airbag, or the glue isn't stong enough. When the airbag deploys WITH STRONG FORCE, the badge will become a projectile. |
did mine a couple days ago... im very satisfied with how it came out.
i used adhesive-backed black crafts foam lying around for the backing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...psa2afc4a7.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ps77e6bf17.jpg |
Just ordered mine, can't wait to replace these scion badges...

You guys do realize you're putting an insecure object, on top of a bomb, that can go off at any time, directly in front of your face??
Definitely looks awesome though - it's really funny seeing everyone jump on board using different backgrounds. |
