Rear Damage

Walked out to a note on my windshield that started with "Sorry about the scratch" At least she left a note though. I'm sure many people would not have. I'm guessing it'll need to be resprayed?

It depends on if it is scratches or if it is paint transfers and scuffs.

I'd take a rag with some lacquer thinner on it (wet the rag till tamp) and wipe the area. That will remove any paint transfer. Then use a wet towl (water) and wipe the surface. When the surface is wet if it looks good and you cannot see the scuffs and scratches then there is a good chance you can buff the finish.

If there is any scratches that you can catch your finger nail on your getting a respray.

Thanks. There aren't any finger nail scratches and it actually looks worse in the pictures than it does in person.

The extent of that should buff right out with rubbing compound, finished up with scratch-x.

Rayme 08-15-2013 10:49 AM

Leaving a note without her information is almost worst than no notes at all. Pricks! Sorry about that.

Richard Cranium 08-15-2013 10:51 AM

As others have said, from what it looks like, most of that should buff out, though it's not nearly as simple as mikeTee would have you think...it's nothing you'll be able to accomplish by hand. You'll need a machine to achieve the best possible results.

I would consult with a professional detailer (or two) to start with, then progress up the scale to a body shop if the results are not to your liking.

it looks like it will not be a problem to remove. a clay bar will remove a good majority of the white paint. come back with a polishing pad and polish and see how that works for you. if there are deeper scratches, retry with a compound then re polish.

Well yeah, no hand job ;) is perfect, but it should be better than nothing.

Thanks for all the input. She did leave a number and said she would take care of it so I'm going to get a quote tomorrow and go from there. I definitely want to get it taken care of professionally as I had similar damage on my previous car that started to rust over time.

Check with Bryan @Mr. Sparkle to see what he thinks. If memory serves correctly, you're not too far from his shop in West Babylon.

bkblitzed 08-19-2013 04:13 AM

if your nail doesn't get caught in it it's a simple fix. Wet sand, paint evener, wax. The scratch X and products that claim to remove scratches are garbage imo.

rapidcars 08-19-2013 11:49 AM

Brought it to 2 shops and they both said it needs to be repainted. Luckily, her insurance is taking care of everything. Thanks again for all the help. Bringing it in Wednesday and will hopefully have it back sometime next week.

Richard Cranium 08-19-2013 12:23 PM

Shops...as in bodyshops, or detail shops? Just curious on who's selling the opinion. Not saying anyone is right/wrong since we're not there to touch/feel/see/etc in person...just curious.

Body shops. They both told me the same thing that there are some dents and a section where the paint is chipped off.

Richard Cranium 08-19-2013 01:20 PM

Good deal then. I was worried a body shop was just trying to get more work out of the situation than what was needed. Glad you got it figured out and her insurance is taking care of it.

Isn't that like leaving the scene of an accident?

She left a note so I don't believe so. She can't be expected to wait around until I get back and the damage wasn't bad enough to warrant calling the police over.

Didn't think about it that way. You may proceed.

Elgancho 08-19-2013 02:29 PM

How the hell do you do that to a parked car?! Tsifu

Mr. Sparkle 08-28-2013 08:38 AM

Can't really tell what can or can't be buffed off there. Looks like scuffs / paint transfer which is a good thing. But it might be damage to the clear coat

My shop is in west babylon. I'd be happy to take a look if you like. Just give me a heads up on that.

and I'd be hesistant to compound that area if you don't know what you're doing. paint is thinnest at panel edges. Most of that damage is right along 2 raised edges
