Can an NA FA20 produce exhaust burble/pop?

Sorry if the title is kinda convoluted, here's the background and the question:

I want to keep the car NA (for now), and am looking to upgrade the exhaust. Maybe not all at once, but headers + full exhaust is definitely in the final plan. I compression brake as much as possible, and coming from my B6 S4 (4.2 V8), I really miss the vocal feedback that I get when downshift coasting. Obviously, a flat-4 won't give the same bark and pop as a big catless v8, but I am looking for something similar.

I'd like to pick up a UEL eventually, but first step is going to be a catback and maybe front/overpipe combo. As this is my DD, I'd like to keep it a little civilized/low-drone, but I didn't buy this car to blend into the background and don't mind some noise under load.

Is there a good option for catback that gives the sound I'm after? Can I keep a cat/cats, or will that pretty much kill the effect on this platform? Trying to avoid a CEL, as I don't mind tuning, but didn't want to get into that yet (though I DO want to get rid of the torque dip...hoping headers can solve that problem a bit).

I've tried the :search:, but "exhaust pop" pulls up everything from pop-rivets to soda pop :sigh: Just hoping that someone else knows what I'm talking about and can steer me into a few brands to look at, or even let me know if what I'm afer exists.

Thanks for any help.

You could tune it in. A Catless header would certainly amplify it.

I get that it sounds cool, but it's not traditionally a good thing. It's a relic of days gone by with no variable valve timing and running rich.

Yes, you will get afterfire if you replace the exhaust components downstream of the header.

You'd have to have a free flowing exhaust

Headers + catless exhaust

A non-resonated midpipe helps. I hear a little more burble/pop with my Perrin non-resonated CBE. Pretty sure the more resonators and cats you remove from the exhaust path, the clearer it should be.

Here was a thread about it a while back.

If the "boxer rumble" you're wanting takes priority over looks of the muffler/tailpipes than you should invest in the UEL first. The rumble is mainly due to the unequal length of 2 of the 4 exhaust runners and the different exhaust gas pulse it produces. Personally not my cup of tea.

You'll find a bit more threads like this. Try searching for "boxer rumble", "burble", or similar.

I have the nameless downpipe and axleback and I get that sound pretty often when I let off the throttle quickly.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I figured the basics would remain true (less resonators, cats, restrictions = clearer path = more sound and feedback). Glad to know it's an option.

Thanks, I get that the UEL gives the "Subie rumble", which is a big part of what's drawing me to that type over the EL, but what I was more curious about specifically was crackle/pop on overrun and burble on compression braking.

Good deal, I know there are plently of nameless clips that I can check out to see if this will fit the bill.

Thanks all! Keep any other feedback coming :happy0180:

I may be able to replicate it for you.

Samesies, even with a cat I get some pops.

My car pops like crazy with a straight catback ( Buddy club spec 2) + a test pipe, and the main cause is that my ecu is adjusting and running a bit rich :)

I know this makes absolutely no sense, but I get tons more pops/burble with my Nameless muffler delete than I ever did with my non-resonated Perrin catback. I thoroughly enjoy downshifts now, especially while on track.

I can believe that. The Perrin muffler is probably more effective at quieting pops/burbles than the stock midpipe resonator (+ muffler delete).

I get it with Catless header, stock over front and mid pipe with resonated muffler delete and I love it.
