It can help, but it won't prevent it. The edge of the cut won't hold paint as well as a factory edge will. Toyotas metal quality has improved since the days of the 80's Pickups though, so I'd hope in 20 years time we won't see a bunch of twins with holes in the bodies from the dreaded tinworm.

I don't know. In the factory cars go thru multi-step electrostaticly applied baths of coatings to prevent rust. That sort of process COMPLETELY, at a molecular level, coats every microscopic crevice in the sheet metal.

Here's the cut...

In reggie@circuitsoul's install (http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43345) there appears to be a tar-like substance applied to the edge (probably to deal with rust).

Do all of the body shops that install Rocket Bunny do the same? Will whatever is used to seal the cut in the sheet metal remain elastic and durable for the life of the car?

They got tired of children on bicycles being faster than them...

I think it's like any new platform/vehicle, people will buy the newest thing and then get bored/hype dies off so they sell it. I think a lot of people got caught up in hype about it being a drivers car, when they really wanted a "fast" car, and when they excitement of having it wore off, they realized they'd much rather have something for more straight line type stuff.

And what the hell happened like halfway through the first page of this thread? It's getting crazy in here.

alot of people are 'unhappy with the 86' , i dont know if it should be a suprise or should it be expected :(

Also, I spied something hilarious on the painters tape on the gas cap cover of the white frs on the first page

My guess is that the main reasons are:

1) Financial
2) Change of lifestyle
3) Impulse buying retraction

#3 Is the reason I first drove this car back in january. One of my college friends was literally walking by a Scion dealership and bought one, just like that. That was back when according to him, it was rare to find one in the dealership.

Anyways, last month he sold it to carmax because he realized he didn't use it nor liked it at all. We both bought our BMW 328is together about 3 years ago when we graduated, and I guess he was expecting to have a "M3 quality" of sports car. Anyways, it was an impulse buy and someone else got the benefit of it.

A 328i is by no means M3 quality... and um... the FR-S may not be as fast, but its sure a hell more fun than the M3... and won't leave you feeling like mush after a long drive... and the FR-S should be about as fast as a 328...

that impulse buy is true, i was ready to get a frs 2 weeks ago but after talking to my dad and asking on the forums here everyone said to wait until the end of the year so the dealer will give a better deal (on the 2013's) and you can see whats new in the '14s. On top of that the prices on the 370z dropped(another car im looking at). So I guess waiting is no harm.

All the reasons listed in these post are valid. I would say that if you really do not "get" this car then now is the perfect time to ditch it because they are still rare enough to be commanding great resale and trade in value. Sure, you will be taking a 3-5K hit after you figure in sales tax and everything but those that try to sell them during the winter or next year some time are probably going to get hurt alot worse.

Maybe I should grab one of these cheap.

1. I don't think it's very many in relation to the cars that have been bought. I ought to know, as I just finished shopping for a used one.

2. Extremely this:

From all my years of being on car forums, one of the universal things I've realized is that the number one enemy of fun/extra/fast/project cars and motorcycles is: the common baby.

because racecar. Ive considering selling mine at times. Impulse buy. its a fun car, but the market hype damages this car. too many options it gives a headache. and then its sad that you are proud you added that exhaust, and then you see 20 diff threads that have added 20k or more in mods. and then you feel like, dam, why continue writing in my build thread, since nobody will post in it.

Not bashing those great builds, but some people feel discouraged, that for them to have better car, you need to put a lot of money.

Case in point, HP. every HP needed becomes expensive. 5000 for a supercharger? 10,000 for trd brakes? its better to go buy a old car, and buy cheap stuff over ebay and achieve greater hp.

at the end, its whatever...

I know what you mean... I have no money for mods, so I haven't even bothered creating a build thread... all I have so far is JDM knee pads, and soon a yospeed center console plaque... :(

suaveflooder 08-08-2013 01:46 AM

Great posts! (well, most) I'm gonna agree with the "impulse buy" theory, or people not getting what they expected because they bought the hype.

I personally love the car, but it wasn't an impulse buy for me (well, I guess it kinda was now that I think about it), and I knew what I was getting.

You don't need mods. Just drive and have fun and make memories and share photos from your adventures so that we may share in the experience.

And it should go without saying, don't call people "retard." It's in bad taste. (That last part is not aimed at you Luis)
