Press/Blog Release on FR-S Price (no BeSpoke Audio)

The press announcement is on the Scion blog here. It answers the question about the radio...

"The FR-S will come standard with an eight-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB 300-watt maximum output Pioneer™ audio system. Standard features also include HD Radio™ technology and Bluetooth® connectivity that allows both hands-free phone connection as well as streaming audio capability."

If this isn't Bespoke then what does it add? If it has bluetooth audio streaming I'm happy.

I guess you need Bespoke to get the girls attention at the next Twilight movie release? (Giggity)

Dang, that seems a bit... well off from my prediction. I thought they would include the Bespoke unit to say hey, that's why we have it at this price. You get this shiny new twitter thing, see! Great value!

Awesome I hoping for something similar in the BRz? At least now we can see a little bit of why the FRS is priced where its at.

I guess I'm making an assumption that if it was BeSpoke they would have called it out by name. Frankly, I'm OK that it doesn't. I didn't want it. What will be interesting is to see if we can get a delete credit for this headunit as I do want real stand-alone NAV, but not what the BeSpoke offered (which required your phone).

<--hasn't been paying attention to radio option discussions...

What is "BeSpoke?" And, why should I care about it?

Lots of details if you search the forum but its basically their new high-end headunit that uses your phone to run Apps. So you can do Nav from your phone, update our Twitter feeds, watch Porn, etc. You know, all those things that are crucial to the driving experience.

It uses Pioneer's new Android based Zyphr interface. Many people thought it may be included standard since it was listed as part of the original press release that the FRS would be the first car featuring the radio.

Interesting the BRZ is supposed to have staggered tires (225's in back), while the Scion doesn't. That might explain some of the understeer reported on the BRZ.

I'm on the other side of the fence, I want to use my phone for nav because google-Nav is far more accurate than 99% of the in-car systems and updates in real time. If I can get one of those OBD Android sensors in the FRS that would be cool. I'd like to track everything through my phone if I can.

I use phone nav about 60% of the time. However, I travel to areas fairly frequently where there isn't sufficient coverage, and I don't like losing NAV when I'm taking a phone call. It's a personal preference that probably influenced heavily by my other hobby, flying.

If you could get the OBD feed to the head unit with apps to support it, I might be willing to compromise on that.

This standard equipment is nothing new.

All 2012 Scions come with base HU and HD Radio/Bluetooth.

I thought with Higher price, they would include something along the lines of Bespoke.

Streaming audio sounds like Bespoke to me.

Anything with Bluetooth will stream audio from a smartphone. I do that through my motorcycle helmet.

kmbkk 03-22-2012 11:44 AM

Too bad it doesn't have a sat radio capability standard.
