Why is TPMS Transplant expensive?

Hi friends,

I was looking into what the cost was for a TPMS swap into new aftermarket wheels. I was quoted $80 for all four but I'm trying to understand why it costs so much to have a seemingly simple job completed.

This leads me to thinking, why can't I do TPMS myself? Where is the value-add that is justifying this cost?

Has anyone done their own TPMS transplant and what was required?

Thanks!

They're charging you for breaking down the old wheels to get the sensors off.

Optional step: Deflate tires really not optional
1. Break bead
2. Fish your hand inside tire/wheel to unfasten TPMS from wheel
3. Remove TPMS
4. Break bead on other set of wheels
5. Fish your hand inside tire/wheel to fasten TPMS to wheel
6. Reinstall tire to wheel
7. Inflate.

Also: some aftermarket wheels are not drilled for this, so you're essentially paying them to have it mounted properly which may involve drilling the wheel barrel to add it on.

This is mostly a problem on multi-piece wheels.

See the pics for info: https://www.google.com/search?q=tpms...w=1280&bih=939

You don't need this though, if you monitor your tire pressure manually and/or on a regular basis.

It is since I don't know what the value add is for the service.

But to infinte012's point, I completely overlooked that they have to pull them out of my old tires.

Skip the TPMS swap entirely.

0$

the ONLY outcome is that the warning light will be on in your dash. A tune will take care of that if you go that route as well.

America's Tire charged me $5/wheel for their "rebuild kit", which was basically them taking them out of my old wheels and putting them in my new ones. The rebuild kit is most likely the wearable parts in the valve stem (gaskets and other such stuff).

Still, at $20 for them to be transferred, it is worth it. Discount Tire and Tire Rack also have the $5/wheel standard. Sure, you can just ignore the light, but if you're going to do something to your car, you should do it right. Also, make sure you're checking your tire pressure often anyway!

That is only 10$ each to technically mount and balance 8 tires... thats a steal take it...

^^ This! Most places here charge $15/wheel to mount/balance new tires, $80 total to pull the sensors out of existing wheels/tires and install them in new ones is a great price.

That was my point...

And you don't need to drill the new wheels or anything. My aftermarket wheels were fine, didn't even need a rebuild kit.

$80.00 is on the high side.
