Intakes that don't need a tune

Hi,
I was just curious which intake gets the best hp gain and sound with out needing a tune?

aem comes with a tune but ALL will benefit from a tune.

that little plug with the resister inside, is not a tune.........:bellyroll:

I would say AEM. That "resistor" box is suppose to correct for air flow. I think DSports Mag, or something like that, did an article on the AEM install on the FRS/BRZ. It gained something like 10hp without "tune" and 10 more with tune for a total of 20hp gain. Don't quote me on exacts, just check out the article. I think they did like 35 dyno pulls? I don't remember. Interesting read.

Sorry for asking alot of questions been searching all day im really new here so finding answers has been tough

Check out the June Issue of D-sport. There is a great article in there about intakes for the FRS and about tuning.

The Perrin and FA20Club intakes don't require a tune. But they don't make much power without one. And to clean the filter you have to take the bumper bar off. The TRD intake doesn't need a tune and the filter stays in the engine bay but from all reports doesn't make much power either.

Best bang for buck is a drop in filter in the std airbox.

we have plenty of our intakes instock nice increase in intake sound when under heavy throttle almost stock sound when driving normally and doesnt require a tune

Agreed. I also read the dsport article and the largest gain w/o tune was k&n and Injen intakes both making ~8whp on the stock tune. The problem is that the make all that power up top. They actually suffer more in the torque dip than te stock intake.

In general no intake system can touch the factory intake w/o a tune. The stock box has the highest flow/hp below 4500rpm where most daily driving takes place.

That said the drop in k&n filter or TRD or any drop in filter will provide a touch more sound and a definite increase in low end throttle response. The numbers may be negligible but your butt dyno can feel it.

Best $40 I've spent on the car. It also bumped up mpg. I'm currently getting 32+ mpg. Hope this answers some of your questions

Another option that has yielded positive results w/o tune is the stock box w drop in filter and a silicone intake tube. It's more of a low end setup and the silicone tube smooths airflow.

So the aem isnt the best choice i guess even though its suppose to compensate for the more airflow?

My TRD intake felt a little disappointing for the first couple of weeks but I firmly believes it (along with my catback) must have made more than just a couple of HP.

I added both the exhaust and intake within a week of each other and for the first couple of weeks I could not notice much difference except for sound. (I did an ECU reset after installation).

After several weeks I gradually noticed more and more of a difference. Now the car definitely feels like it has more power than when it was stock.

Maybe it was the ECU adjusting, I dont know. Of course I have no dyno numbers to prove anything.

I have no tune yet but I do plan on getting a local dyno tune eventually. Right now I keep getting suckered into other things like tint and wheels. I figure Ill get the tune after header development is a little more flushed out and I can afford one of those to go with the tune.

The answer is get a tune. I don't understand why people are so averse to tuning. If you don't tune, you make very little additional power, so you're putting parts on just for the sake of it. If you can't afford both, do just the tune.
