Any experience with shifter springs?
Hey guys, anyone have any experience with the MTEC shifter springs?
One of the biggest issues I have with the car is that the shifting feels a bit off to me. There's a lot of movement in the system and shifting from 4 -> 5 often feels like I have to slow the shift (compared to the other gears) to make sure I complete the shift properly. 2->3 is a little clunky as well. I have a Perrin rear shifter rod bushing that's going to go in there to help with the deflection in the system. Interested in the MTEC springs since they're super cheap and somewhat promising... On paper, it seems that adding the MTEC springs may help with my 4->5 shifting issues a bit perhaps. My concern would be that I don't want the shifting to be too tight. In general, I like the resistance of the shifter, just don't want to hunt for the gears like it seems I have to sometimes. For 30 bucks I'm pretty tempted.. Any thoughts? |
When I was installing my set of the MTec springs, I didn't think it would make that much of a difference as comparing the stock and Mtec spring side by side, I could not tell the difference in spring rate compressing between my fingers. Installation is really easy with only the front end jacked. The difference is when it is installed. It isn't any more difficult to shift where you have to be he-man or the hulk to get into gears. It's less crunchy shifting 2->3. Besides doing shifter springs, I have the Perrin transmission mount support, rear shifter bushing, and changed fluids to Motul Gear 300. All have made improvements in the feel of the car transmission to make it smoother. The car is still easy to drive, my girlfriend who weighs ~100 lbs can drive it, if that's any indicator of whether or not this will make it difficult to drive.
At first it feels noticeably stiffer with less play, but you get used to it and are effortlessly shifting gears with ease since you have a better feel for what the transmission is doing. I feel the car should have come with these springs from the factory. Makes it feel less like a toy. :burnrubber: You can see side by side pics here: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showp...43&postcount=4 |

Wait.. but its a "TOY" -yota.. haha :bonk: im sorry.. but now i feel that i want these mods.. That is what i am experiencing.. and i do want a smoother transmission feel |
I often feel like I need to Hulk the 4-5 shift. Lots of resistance going into 5th at the higher RPMs; do the springs help with that?

Just as a heads up:
If people want to get these, get them direct from the MTEC site.. it's 5 bucks shipping compared to 14 bucks shipping from ft86speedfactory... |

Mtec....
springs are a good product but making a vid about how "simple" is bull to sell the springs...in the vids and instructions from them, they ignore the fact to take all old locktite off...all...also taking the detent off very delicate since it can damage the trans threads upon removing...and most important ...to thread by hand detent completely like other forum members recomended before actually replacing the detent with spring...
Their product is legit, but trying to sell it with such "simple" vids and instructions is bull...like many things in the aftermarket industry... The detent is a non reusable item on the frs ... so does say the frs repair manual pdf found in this forum. So do your research in the forum before getting into them cause the way mtec say is just as the same thing of aftermarket cold intakes intant 10 hp on install. |
Two thoughts....
1. When I ordered them from speed factory, I waited until I had an order over 250 so that the shipping was free. 2. Be very careful not to crossthread the bolts when you install these. |
