Comparison with 944
 

While I realize a lot on these forums aren't old enough to remember the Porsche 944 ;) it seems like there are many similarities. Size, wheelbase, power, weight, balance etc. Yes the 944 had torsion rear suspension, inline 4 and the gearbox in the back, but....

Btw, I wish Porsche would bring back the 944.

As towards comparing this with a porsche... I hope it doesn't cost anywhere NEAR that price range.

Wow, I had just been thinking about this today. I agree that they have very similar messages to convey and they do it in like ways. Clean 944's are becoming more difficult to find and the compliance with high power demands leaves many 944's not cutting it for the consumer looking for a little more oomph. I think it would come down to which sentiment you would rather follow, the nuances of owning a classic porsche and the responsibilities that come with it; or giving up a bit of heritage to go with a new car that modernizes similar goals.

My Dad had a 944 back in the day. I used to shift from the passenger seat. We used to have a ball in that thing...when it wasn't in the shop!

I owned one a couple of years ago. It was alot of fun. I paid about 3k for mine (1985.5) with Fuch wheels. Clutch was bad and needed replacement, along with the a suspension bit or two in the front. I had the timing belt replaced if I remember right too. Total cost to make it a reliable daily driver was 2k. 5k for a fun, reliable, daily driver with ok gas mileage, very worth it. The power is low, but easy to have fun with on streets.

After I removed the interior it was at least twice as fun. All of the extra noise was worth it. Since it has a transaxle that sits right behind you, when you take off all the sound deadening you can really hear it. The inline four sounds pretty nice too.

My first car was a 1988 Guards Red 944 n/a 1999-2001 and then I had a 1986 Alpine White 944 Turbo from 2001-2007 before getting my current car as a reliable DD when I graduated from college.

This seems like the closest equivalent to a modern 944 in a long time and is why I am so interested. I can do without the power of a turbo now and just want something engaging and fun to drive and by all accounts the BRZ/FR-S seems to be just that.

I will forever have the feeling of driving those 944s etched in my memory so if I drive a FT86 and start to get those warm fuzzies... well I am going to be in trouble. :)
