Hit a bump - any potential issues? (Pic incl.)

Hey everyone - wondering if I could get some insight from the amazing community here...

Was a bit hasty backing out of my driveway today and the wheel went over the far left of my drive way as I was turning to merge my tail end with the road (the driveway edge starts to become elevated to merge with height of curb). The resulting drop caused a thud to my main front under panel (scrapes in middle of pic) and smacked the white towing hook (?), pictured far right.

I checked the corresponding position of the under panel through the engine bay and saw that there was nothing on the immediate other side (phew). However, I can't tell how the hook is secured to the body, perhaps it's part of the main frame. I'm worried that it might have caused some damage that I can't see as I feel that the hook may have taken the lion's share of the damage as it seems to protrude further than the panel, therefore hitting the curb first.

And I just passed the 1 week mark :( ah well.

Thanks in advance!

should be fixed, thanks

Looks like you just hit the bottom tow hook and the plate. Doesn't look like any issues to me.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. Just looking to make sure that banging the tow hook hard in the upward direction wouldn't do much damage as I can't see/have no idea how this is attached to the body. Thanks!

whataboutbob 07-29-2013 12:48 AM

I think you'll be fine. At least the scratches on the undercarriage won't be visible. :)

Flat Black VW 07-29-2013 12:50 AM

no worries

pmdc 07-29-2013 12:51 AM

Doesn't look dented, so I doubt anything mechanical felt the impact. Should be fine.

humfrz 07-29-2013 01:33 AM

If it drives OK ..... you should be good to go ....;)

Its a write off

Demiurge 07-29-2013 01:56 AM

Wow, your car is totally totaled. But I can take it off your hands with only a small towing fee.

Mikem53 07-29-2013 09:05 AM

Your fine.. I'm sure it sounded worse than it actually was..

zaptorque 07-29-2013 11:35 AM

most likely totaled, sorry guy

636 07-29-2013 04:43 PM

I'm lowered a lot and scrape/bang those two things on a daily basis, probably much harder than you. :P

You'll be okay :)

Yeah..that was the issue it sounded like all hell broke loose at the time :confused0068: guess I'm still getting used to the fragility of the panels on the FR-S (to keep it agile, of course - no hate!), my previous DD was a GTI and that thing was pretty solid, being german and all. I could really tell the difference the first time I opened the door/closed the trunk.

Yeah, when this car hits something...it's loud. SO loud, it's scary haha.

WolfsFang 07-31-2013 07:42 PM

HAH thanks nothing, you should see the bottom of my car, the same tow hook on my car is almost broken off XD

I was driving in a unfamiliar area last night and there was a fairly large bump filled with rocks in the middle of the road. Drove right through it and damaged my bumper and one of the hooks is bend at a 45 degree angle. Could this be a problem?http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c8706f2023.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...0898aaaf5d.jpg

Mr.ac 05-18-2016 01:29 AM

Totaled. It might catch on fire, and you'll might lose your ****. I'll take it off your hands for $200.

Joking aside, if the car doesn't pull to the side, it's all good.

A bump filled with rocks ...... ??

Do you mean a pothole filled with rocks or a pile of rocks ..... ??

I don't see how that hook got that bent without messing up the car's alignment. You may wish to have the alignment checked.

I don't reckon the bent hook in itself, is going to cause any problems.

It was like small ditch for water to go through and it was made out of rocks

Well, not really a good way to check yourself.

Like @Mr.ac mentioned, if it doesn't pull one way or another and the steering wheel is still centered ...... it most likely is OK.

However, it has been my experience, that when I really whack something with the front wheels ...... the alignment is usually off.

Yes, you can do your own alignment ...... just get together a bunch of levels and laser lights and a handful of specs and ....... just messen with ya ...... :D

Back-in-the-day, we could do an alignment with a 2x2 piece of board, 2 nails, a piece of chalk and some string ........ and the secret formula ..... which I can't remember .......:bonk:

Dude I do this all the time (not purposely) that's why you have a skid plate. I'm sure everyone's plate is dinked up. My driveway has a high curb. If I'm not easing out in an angle it will thud going off curb

guybo 05-18-2016 08:22 AM

OP- the plate did it's job. It deserves a purple heart. Wounded in the line of duty, that is a damn fine plate.

as for zman- I think humfrz is right. I don't see how the suspension wouldn't have been affected by that hit in that area. I had a tC with a double wishbone suspension not completely unlike the FRS suspension and the lightest whack would require an alignment. To test it, on a straight flat paved parking lot, from a stop put the hammer down and completely load up the rear of the car and pay attention to if the rear of the car wanders a little or pulls. It's harder to tell with the rear alignment being off than the front. Also doing a hard turn to each side will test the alignment.

I agree with you.
I have video recording on my dashcam. You think i can use it for insurance to fix my bumper and check everything out?

I'd say it's worth a shot, especially if it was a real road (vs a backwood road) and also if there were no signs indicating it was there that would sway in your favor I assume.

This is it , as you can see in the first picture you can't really see it from the car because it's a slight uphill and there's no lights

I noticed the plastic cover at the bottom frame has a gap compared to the passenger side. Can someone confirm this for me by looking at their car.
Both pictures are from drivers side

No signs at all. Just a speed limit one.

DANG! @zman ........ didn't anyone tell you that this car is NOT an off road vehicle .....:eyebulge:

You're lucky you didn't hit it going faster and set the suspension into convolutions trying to adjust to what you just hit ....... then throwing your car into those bushes off to the right......:bonk:

OK, I still suggest you have the alignment checked and unless something is lose or hanging down underneath your car ...... I wouldn't worry about it.

humfrz

PS - feel lucky you didn't hit that on a motorcycle ......:sigh:
