Top Gear Cool Wall. (FT edition)

Yes, I know, the Cool Wall is not a democracy. But here it can be since The Three Blokes are not present for their input.

Where on the Cool Wall do you think the BRZ and FR-S should be? And since the two siblings are somewhat different, you can rate them separate.

But remember some rules of the cool wall:
  • Placement has nothing to do with how good a car is, or how it performs.
  • Supercars are automatically uncool.
  • Fashionable cars are uncool because their impact fades quickly.
  • Having to explain a car makes it uncool.
  • If any of The Three Blokes own a car it's uncool regardless.
  • Only Aston Martins get to go into the DB9 cooler.

So.. Where would would slap a picture of a BRZ, or an FR-S?

No doubt in the cool section. However, I've seen a lot of people try to explain this car; why it only has 200 HP and how its low center of gravity gives it great handling.
Nonetheless, anybody who saw this on the street without knowing was it was has to think its cool. I mean, look at it! Its destined to be an iconic sports car. What's not cool about that?

Draco-REX 03-17-2012 08:42 PM

I'm going to put the BRZ in Cool and the FR-S in uncool.

[ClarksonMode]
The BRZ is cool because it has all of the nice handling of a Miata and other small cars. But it looks better. AND it has a hard top so you don't have to worry about everyone seeing your bad toupe.

The FR-S unfortunately gets bumped down to Uncool because it's being marketed to the Fast and Furious types who will stick big wings and flashing lights on it and generally ruin the car.

Disclaimer: since this is the internet, I feel I should state this. The previousstatements about the BRZ and FR-S were tongue-in-cheek and meant to be taken in context along with the Top Gear UK television show. If anyone believes I mean all FR-S drivers are FnF kids who like neons and excessive wings, they obviously haven't seen the show.

I said uncool, because you'll probably end up explaining to someone that the car is a joint effort between Subaru and Toyota, hence the reason why they're seeing a sporty Toyota driving past hehe

I said cool, because a sports car really is a thing of the past. Hot hatches have taken over, and while they are cool, they can't be used in every form of Motorsport (missing the RWD part). These are, and while ppl might ruin them, they just might bring back the era that was once :)

With all the hype, I'm surprised TG didn't get to try the car...

The Volvo V70 went into the fridge at one point.

That said, uncool on both counts. Any car which needs to have it's coolness explained to the general populace is always uncool, and is usually met with adenoid/anorak related mockery.

They film episodes several months in advance. The car wasn't available when they where filming the current episodes.

China episode (1st in a season) was filmed in Dec'11. Journalists got to try GT86/BRZ about the same time. I think it was feasible if Toyota/Subaru really wanted it to happen.

Draco-REX 03-17-2012 10:25 PM

I'm quite sure the GT-86 or BRZ (likely both) will show up on TG. There's too much chatter for it not to happen. I think it'll happen in the summer series when the car is available.

There will be the usual gripes. But I think we'll see a final verdict like the Chris Harris review.

dsgerbc 03-17-2012 10:39 PM

Sure, too late for that for the winter season ;)
I'm just somewhat surprised, given the otherwise impressive hype-machine...

Definitely atleast uncool. Any car that has to be explained is instantly uncool.

BRZ>GT86>FR-S>Cats on Youtube

They do have a written review sorta more of a 20 minute test drive review thing on the site.
