quiet and loud exhaust both in 1

Been having this idea of making an exhaust that can be quiet and loud with a touch of a button.
The exhaust pictured above is for Nissan R35 GTR. Here's a video of the difference in sound levels:

It's pretty much a dull exit design with an electronically controlled valve on one side.
The side with the electric valve is straight pipe with no muffler or restrictions.
The other side has a muffler to help quiet down the exhaust when you are just cruising thru town.

I plan to make the side with the muffler with a slightly smaller diameter piping and a well packed muffler to keep the noise level down.
On the electric valve side it will be a 2.75 inch piping (proven diameter to make power on a FRS/BRZ) and with either straight pipe or a high flow muffler.

What do you guys/gals think? If there's enough interest, we might just put this into production.

Oh yes.

Argh! I was about 80% sure of what exhaust I was going to buy next and then I see this..

So cruel..

Yeah I dig this. A lot.

Interesting idea. I like just normal, vanilla, quiet/tasteful dual exhaust that still has good flow so I voted "NO", but I think there are probably a lot of people that would be interested in something like this.

Fancier version of a cutout. Not a fan since I like loud even cruising. Not getting a UEL header to be quiet.

I would consider it if:
1. the quiet setting was no louder than the stock catback
2. the loud setting was about the same as most resonated catbacks

I do not want straight pipe loud. I will be adding a catless header soon and already have a nameless catted front pipe. I would love to be able to put it on quiet mode for the early morning / late night cold starts. I could probably accomplish this just by using the electronic butterfly valve smaller id plate than the pipe when closed.

It would be a lot easier and cheaper to adapt an existing exhaust and put the dump before the axle back.

For example, you could put the cutout before the muffler on the Perin axle back and achieve the same results. Cutouts are illegal in most places anyway so I wouldn't worry about where the exhaust is being vented too much if that's a concern.

True that it's easier, but didn't at least one tuner company melt the bumper off their frs by removing the muffler without directing the exhaust out from under the car?

@chrisbfrs had an electronic cutout on his frs. It was pretty bad ass. Flip the switch and blahhh. Helps on the top end for sure. I always wanted him to hook something up to the ecu or throttle so it would open automatically at wot.

I might be interested in something like the GM Corvette/Camaro setup where the mufflers have dual paths - one that travels through all the baffling, and one that's more or less straight through, with an actuator that opens/closes the straight-through outlet.

The pictured setup looks helluva loud and raspy, probably in both 'modes'.

There is a company here in Aus that make these sort of exhausts but it doesn't look like they have developed one for the 86 just yet. But i am sure you could incorporate one of their mufflers in an existing system.

EDIT: forgot to add the link. Check HERE

I would consider this if my car was a daily driver and I wasn't concerned with weight. But I'm just trying to go fast. Whatever "fast" ends up sounding like in the end is fine with me. Loud, quiet, raspy, Justin Beiber... whatever's fastest.

I wouldn't go briber even if it gave me light speed..

I think it all factors into 1) cost 2) ease of installation

#2 seems to be the biggest round our community. Not too many are willing to splice or drill brand new cars.

But if there's a video up... I might have to jump in on this one! Maybe do the cut out closer to the y section to stop the turbulence of exhaust? Just a suggestion as I'm no engineer :)
