OZ Formula HLT vs. XXR 527

Which would you prefer assuming you had two pick between these two wheels? Please note their prices below. I'm not trying decide on wheels to buy or anything... this is just out of curiosity/for fun. Voting is anonymous.

For both brands, 17" weigh 19-21 lbs and 18" weigh 20-22 lbs (reported) with XXRs being comparably lighter and wider. Example:
Gold OZ Formula HLT 18x8 = 21.65 lbs
Gold XXR 527 18x8.75 = 20.9 lbs

I really dislike the weird sizes xxr is doing. 17x8.25 etc

Ammonia 07-23-2013 01:32 AM

The only reason I voted for the OZ is because the extra holes in the XXR make it look really lame.

By that logic, I guess Volk CE28N and Work XD9 are really lame for having extra holes.

Unlike those "lame" wheels, XXR 527 can come with 5 holes only (5x100), albeit slightly heavier than the dual-drilled versions. ;)

Yep, I think dual-drilled looks extremely tacky.

I suppose your thread asking for my opinion is the wrong place to share my views. :slap:

If you were biased to begin with, why make this stupid poll to begin with? To shit on people's opinions?

martincelica 07-23-2013 11:22 AM

I love xxr 527... !!

Don't get all offended now; I want to hear people's views. Wasn't trying to shit on your opinion; I was simply stating facts about other well known wheels that don't get shitted on for having 10 holes and similar spoke design and how XXR 527 has a single-drill option to which your opinion can't apply. You really should be careful when you call my poll stupid (that's not what this thread is about plus go read forum rule #1)....

You got my opinion, and you discount it because other manufacturer's offer dual drilled. That has nothing to do with what I'm saying. The OZs you showed were single drilled. The XXRs you showed were dual drilled. I prefer single drilled. How does that apply to any other manufacturer? If you posted up some dual drilled BBSs I'd still go for single drilled.

Here is what is in the OP: "Which would you prefer assuming you had two pick between these two wheels only? I'm not trying decide on wheels to buy or anything... this is just out of curiosity/for fun. Voting is anonymous."

Those two wheels. Not a hypothetical OZ vs XXR poll. You posted pictures of both and I decided from there. If they were both dual drilled then I'd probably pick the XXRs because they look slightly more concave in the rear. (Probably due to being a wider wheel? IDK).

Go ahead and call the forum police for insulting your poll if you want. I gave my opinion and clearly you're upset that I shared it.

Enjoy your poll.

Not upset at all; just forming my argument (there's a difference).

Xxr 527 wins. Just don't get the chromium black, I made that mistake. It looks like a cheap finish in person, so I had mine powder coated.

Slash 07-23-2013 12:17 PM

I'm not starting a war but I've owned several sets of xxr's including 527s that I preordered back when they first came out and waited forever to get. Xxr wheels have the tackiest cheapest looking finishes. I always buy them in flat black so I can easily repaint them. Imo xxr and rota wheels look tacky on the 86 platform as its such a beautiful car you're not doing it justice with an xxr wheel. To each their own but I've been lurking for weeks all over to decide what wheels to get and after seeing so many xxr's on frs/brzs already, I just couldn't do it.

Key items I want to point out which I laid out when I started this poll:

For both brands, 17" weigh 19-21 lbs and 18" weigh 20-22 lbs (reported) with XXRs being comparably lighter and wider. Example:
Gold OZ Formula HLT 18x8 = 21.65 lbs
Gold XXR 527 18x8.75 = 20.9 lbs

OZ Formula HLT
Four 17" wheels: $1200 (estimate)
Four 18" wheels: $1600 (estimate)

XXR 527
Four 17" wheels: $500 (estimate)
Four 18" wheels: $600 (estimate)

Curious to know why the OZs have more votes thus far. Are the XXR's dual-drilled holes (which look better and weigh less than its single-drilled version IMO) not worth the lighter weight, concave design, and $1000 savings compared to OZs?

I'll have to agree with you. What colors other than flat black are you referring to? My gold ones have tiny paint imperfections when viewed up close but nothing bad enough to turn away the savings which is so worth it. The most flawless finishes on more expensive wheels will still accumulate knicks from road debris. If I ever need to replace a wheel for whatever reason, a new XXR only costs $130. It's comforting.

I was also lurking for wheels (still am) but the current selection of wheels from "reputable" brands don't come close to the value and styling I get from XXR 527s.

The finish on my wheels hardly stuck out like a sore thumb compared to other blue on gold Subies I parked next to. In fact it got a lot props (there were 10 other cars from this cruise not pictured here but facing our cars).
