Kinda off topic but there has been a few ppl here in Madison, wi that traded in their Tacoma TRD package that wasn't really a trd package. They just put the sticker on and ripped the dealerahip off. Lol. I won't say who tho..

And THAT ladies and gentleman is rebadging for criminal purposes (fraud)!
Now having said that, if the dealer is to dumb to notice they almost deserve it!
My dealer all but put my trade in through a microscope before they set a value.

I hope it's not illegal. In fact, I would say that all the people who bought Pontiac GTOs and G8s and converted them to Holdens should be given commendations for good taste.

It's definitely not illegal. If OP's friend got a ticket, it was in error and totally his fault for not fighting it. Has to be for a criminal purpose. Regular people would identify a car by badges anyway so if you have a Toyota badge, they'll tell the cops to look for a white Toyota. If they tell them the license plate, it doesn't matter anyway.

the worst part about it is that it wasn't until a customer that wanted to buy it found out that it wasn't a trd package. So not only the sales person and management but also their tech team. Lol.

Nope, because even over in Australia, despite not being sold here, most people know that Scion is a cruddy US fake brand made to sell Toyotas to teenagers.

No idea why Toyota would waste a good sports car on their "youth" brand.

I say take the badges off my American compatriots. Your car is a Toyota made to wear a badge it doesn't want to. It's like the Nazi's printing the star of David on the Jews before shipping them off....

OK it's nothing like that.

But it's still pretty lame.

I find it very unlikely that ANY state (even anal NJ) actually has a statute that says you cannot alter the "badge" identifiers of any car.

If anyone can actually verify such legislation exists in any state, please post a link to the appropriate statute.

When I was a kid, the first mod we did to a car was to strip of the badges and fill the holes.

BTW, according to my NC title, its a "2013 Toyota coupe"

despite being in law school and having free access to databases for this, i'm going to be lazy since I have to swap exhausts and put a master cylinder brace on before it gets too dark.
there are a few states (maybe all of them?) that I know have laws saying that doing it with the express intent of aiding in a crime is a violation of the vehicle code, but in any case it's a stupid law used to slap fines on because doing something like that is already a crime, either:
a) fraud, if done to affect the outcome of a transaction (sponsorship, sale, purchase, etc., whatever)
b) some more vague interfering with an investigation or obstruction of justice if you do it to stop the police from identifying your vehicle. for example, pulling into a side street after a hit and run and swapping your badges out and then ditching your plates would definitely fall under this. not that they'd be fooled since I've been pulled over in a silver 2003 (aka large boat edition) camry when they were looking for a "blue coupe".

maybe later I'll be a good student and find some statutes! but you're right, without criminal intent I have yet to find a single regulation prohibiting this. a previous poster said it's illegal because it "looks criminal" to cops, but wearing a knockoff handbag or clothes that vaguely resemble that of another person (like a Kobe jersey if you aren't kobe? :)) looks just as "criminal". no offense to cops, but no one except people who care knows anything about what cars look like. 99.9% of average people don't know what a lotus looks like, and as a previous poster noted a cop called his regular nissan a GTR, despite that being nowhere on the body, so the idea that it would fool them is already a stretch.

Hahahahahaha the picture of him giving a thumbs up is the best. Obviously you don't want to encourage this but at least the event organizer should have given him a "har har, fair enough" and asked him to roll out. Pretty hilarious.
