I can see why rebadging would be illegal, but I'd never heard of it before. Makes me want to buy the most haggard Geo Metro I can find, badge it as a Koenigsegg, then drive around a lot.

Imagine how jealous your FR-S driving buddies will be. The badge makes the car, after all.

Congrats, you have jumped the shark on the rebadging asshattery.

So does the owner of a Lamborghini who rebadges his car to an Altima get pull over?

That's a low-profile NJ drug dealer right there! Like I said, I'd be willing to bet that the Nissaghini owner gave the cops some other reason to pull him over. Even in NJ, "could not believe retard had Lambo badges on Nissan" is probably not PC.

I'm also from NJ, I got pulled over not too long ago and the cop asked if I had the correct plates on the car, since it was coming up in the system as a Toyota. I had to explain the whole toyota/scion relationship to him, and why this particular scion would be registered as a toyota.

All of which could have been avoided if I just rebadged the car.

That right there is why a person might get snatched. Any sort of mismatch in the cop/DMV/DoJ/NSA database is going to arouse cop suspicion. Every time a cop is behind me here in PDX, I can see him giving me the rectal probe on his data-thingy. I do my best to look shady, so there may be a reason. I'll bet the FR-S is creeping up the stolen car list, and is also popular with aspiring drug dealers. Never invite the man into your life, as they say.

I agree. The fact is, it's still a Toyota.

It's a Subaru.

Should have told the cop the car has an identity crisis... on papers, it thought it is american so it called itself scion... *open the hood and point at engine cover and oil filter* even in japan it already have 2 identity toyota and subaru... and end with: you guys are the one with the dmv.. you tell the car is.. lol.. most probably the cop will end up crossed eyed being so confused

I think all Scion cars are listed as Toyota in the registration card. My girlfriend has 05 tC and our both registration card listed make as Toyota.

But then... FR-S is made in Subaru Fuji Industry....
This car is just a mix up!!!

The problem with that is the that the cops confusion usually wins.

Is there not far more Subaru in this car than Toyota?

Guess you're assuming by stamps on body panels. This has been hashed out and discussed at least a hundred times since I've been on this site... So do a search on origination of the car etc, in end Tada San invisioned it, designed it, etc etc so ya collaboration but ultimately Toyota...
And Toyota owns part of Subaru plant, and on and on...

Subaru engine, Mostly Subaru suspension, Toyota Injection System, Toyota Design, Toyota Headlights (on the FR-S for sure, not sure about the BRZ).
3 Scion Badges because they wanted to.

In most states, including New Jersey I believe, it is only illegal to rebadge cars if it is done for an 'unlawful purpose'. So if you just like the look you're good. If you did it after comitting a crime so that the car would be harder to identify, or if you tried to sell it as some 'special edition' (fraud) you would be in violation.

If you do rebadge it you will get extra attention from the police just like you will with any modifications...it's part of the game.

So, if I understand you, a Subaru. I have a few items designed by John Browning, but I don't own any John Brownings. I'll happily continue to consider my car to be mostly a Subaru, but then again I wear my penis like a scarf.

A cop flagged me down for driving too fast down an alley (I doubt it, was holding second gear and the alley was narrow, the noise probably attracted him).

Anyways, being the wife was with me I stopped and waited for the cop to walk up and around the car, hand on gun, other hand on radio as he talked to dispatch. At the rear of the car, where Ive put a 'GT86' emblem where the scion emblem was he pauses to tell dispatch the make/model.

"It's a... Nissan GTR. Plate number yada"

No legalities involved, verbal warning and I was on my way.
