Trade value

I unfortunately need to trade the BRZ. Dealer offered $19K for my premium with 9000 miles. Sucks, I know...

Has anyone gotten a decent trade with a dealer?

Sell it private

Like to someone off the street?
Been thinking of doing the same but later down the road.

"Decent trade" and "dealer" doesn't add up. Yeah you're better off trying to sell it privately. You might net at least another 2-3k or more depending on how well you kept up with it.

As soon as you drive a brand new car off the lot, you will lose a significant portion of the value of that car.

You have just found this out the hard way.

gily25 07-16-2013 10:24 AM

That is low...are they the dealer that sold it to you? Did you mention your "situation?"

I recommend trying another dealer and when you discuss the trade-in don't tell them you NEED to sell, tell them you're just considering all your options and you developed further interest in other cars, blah blah.

If you're trading it you can always try to make the end numbers better...(negotiate the car you're purchasing) rather than trying to up the trade.

Try selling the car to carmax or other dealers who sell used cars only
Seems like with 19k u lost atleast 6-7k thats a lot for a car priced this low

Post it on FT86Club. Maybe someone will offer you $20k. Anything over the trade-in is gravy right?

Also tell the dealership about Subaru's guaranteed trade-in program. They should be able to honor a better price through that if Subaru has updated the program to include the BRZ.

That does seem pretty low, but also consider your market (upstate NY) where it may be harder to sell a small RWD sports coupe. I would get a few more quotes and then consider selling privately if you cannot get more than $20-21 from a dealer. I suspect you could sell it privately for $22K if the car is in excellent condition without any accidents, etc.

"You're assured a hassle-free great value when you trade-in your Subaru.

We believe in the quality of our vehicles and feel that you should, too. That's why we created the Subaru Guaranteed Trade-In Program (GTP), tailored specifically so that owners are always provided with the highest possible trade-in value for their vehicle from Subaru.[1]
An offer exclusively for Subaru owners, the GTP guarantees the trade-in amount owners will receive for their qualified Subaru vehicle when a new later model year Subaru vehicle is purchased. The GTP Value is updated monthly and is available for 6 years from the original vehicle warranty start date. The trade-in value is what owners can expect to receive from a dealership for a trade-in vehicle with standard manufacturer's equipment and a good condition rating, when a new later model year Subaru is purchased from a participating Subaru dealer inventory.
No hassle. No questions asked. Hurry to your local Subaru dealer today to have your vehicle evaluated and take advantage of this incredible program."

So gathering from what I just read, he needs to be buying another, newer Subaru if he wants to take advantage of the GTP.

Correct. And I don't think the BRZ is part of this program anyway. I checked my VIN on Subaru's site and it doesn't show up as an eligible car despite being a 2013 model with less than 15K.

Good to know. I used the GTP price on my STI when I was trying to trade it in on an A4. Thank god that didn't pan out.
